Biography: Dr. Rafla-Demetrious is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Weill Cornell Medicine. She received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and received her M.D. from SUNY Downstate, graduating with the distinct honor of Summa Cum Laude.Dr. Rafla-Demetrious did her medical internship at St. Vincent's Medical Center in N.Y.C, New York. Thereafter, she began her Ophthalmology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City in 1994. She then remained there to continue her Fellowship in Glaucoma. Upon completion, she joined the Department of Ophthalmology at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Medical College as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in 2000.Dr. Rafla-Demetrious's clinical practice specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and anterior segment diseases.Dr. Rafla Demetrious received honors from the Alpha Omega Alpha (AA) in 1991.

Biography: Aakriti Shukla MD, MSc is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at CUMC and Attending Ophthalmologist at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Shukla is a board-certified ophthalmologist and specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and cataracts. Her surgical expertise includes minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, traditional glaucoma surgery, glaucoma laser surgery, and cataract surgery.Dr. Shukla completed her undergraduate studies as a Trustee and Renaissance Scholar at the University of Southern California. She received her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, where she was awarded a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship and earned the Edith and Denton McKane Memorial Award for Outstanding Research in Ophthalmology. She completed her training as an ophthalmology resident and served as chief resident at Columbia University's Harkness Eye Institute. She earned a Master of Science degree at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in Patient-Oriented Research. She pursued further glaucoma subspecialty training at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Prior to her appointment at Columbia University, she served as glaucoma faculty at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Shukla has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on her patient care and research. She serves on the editorial boards of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Glaucoma. She is continually inspired by her patients and aims to improve their quality of life while treating their glaucoma.

Many of my patients have glaucoma or are at risk for glaucoma. In addition, I care for patients with general eye conditions such as cataracts. My greatest goal is to preserve and restore vision while providing personalized and compassionate eye care. I look forward to meeting with you.

Whether they suffer from loss of vision, double vision, unstable eye movements or problems with the lids and pupils, I recognize that my patients' whole lives may be affected. Biography: Danielle Trief MD MSc, is an associate professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Trief specializes in the medical and surgical management of cornea, pediatric cornea, cataract, and external diseases. Her surgical expertise includes corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, secondary intraocular lens placement, and anterior segment reconstruction. Dr. Trief established a clinic dedicated to children with corneal diseases. Dr. Trief received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. She was awarded a Thoroun Fellowship to pursue a Masters of Neuroscience at Oxford University, where she graduated with honors. She completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She completed her ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear infirmary and subsequently pursued a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Trief has published numerous articles, book chapters, and teaching videos on adult and pediatric cornea. She has been invited to speak nationally and internationally on her research topics. She is dedicated to the well being of her patients and understands the role that vision can play in everyday life. She grew up volunteering at her mother's preschool, a school for visually impaired and blind children. Dr. Trief is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Cornea Society, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
