Care Philosophy: I have treated patients with cancer for 32 years in private practice and have been the chief of oncology and director oncology at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, NY. I founded the first Cancer Survivorship Program in the region outside of MSKCC. I am interested in how lifestyles and other disorders such as diabetes influence cancer risk and outcomes. I am also interested in cancer genetics and how patients can be proactive in optimizing their quality of life before, during and after treatment.

Biography: Myron M. Studner Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, Associate Director for Population Science, Leader of the Prevention, Control, and Disparities Program for the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia, and Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital Dr. Neugut is a medical oncologist with a particular interest in gastroIntestinal tract cancers, especially of colorectal and gasteric cancers. Under the auspices of Columbia's MD/PhD program, he received his MD and a PhD in Pathobiology in 1977. He did his training in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He returned to Columbia University as an Andrew Mellon Fellow in Epidemiology and Medicine to obtain an MPH in Epidemiology in 1983. Dr. Neugut then joined the faculty at Columbia University with appointments in Medicine and Epidemiology. As both a practicing medical oncologist and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Alfred Neugut's major interests have been on GI tract cancers, notably the epidemiology of colorectal adenomas and cancer, as well as colonoscopic screening. He serves as co-principal investigator of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, a large multi-center effort to explore environmental causes of breast cancer on Long Island. Most recently, his efforts have focused on more clinical topics, such as the epidemiology of second malignancies and the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy among elderly cancer patients. Dr. Neugut focuses a great deal on racial disparities in incidence and survival from cancer and, in particular, variations across subgroups of people of African descent. He leads two large training grants in cancer-related population sciences that together fund 15 pre and postdoctoral trainees in cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health sciences, and serves as a mentor to a number of junior faculty.

Biography: Dr. Catherine Shu isthe Price Family Associate Professor of Medicine anda board-certified medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of thoracic cancers, with a focus on lung cancer. She received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, followed by her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. After residency at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Shu completed her fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she was appointed Chief Fellow. She currently serves as the Director of the Thoracic Medical Oncology Service. She has presented her work at numerous international conferences and has published in the top peer-reviewed oncology journals. She treats the entire spectrum of lung cancer, but has a particular interest in earlier stage and surgically resectable disease, specifically on drug combinations to help improve survival in this setting. Additionally, she devotes part of her research effort to patients with targetable mutations, helping to determine the best sequence of treatments. Of all her achievements, she is proudest to be able to offer individualized and compassionate care to each and every one of her patients. Biography: Michelle Boyar, MD, is board certified in medical oncology and an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Boyar has a clinical interest in palliative care practices in oncology, gastrointestinal cancers, genitourinary cancers, as well as general oncology. She treats patients with oncologic conditions, such as bladder, prostate, bowel, colon-rectal, esophageal, gallbladder, bile duct, gastric, kidney, and pancreatic cancers. Dr. Boyar strives to form close relationships with her patients and serves her community by offering comprehensive care and connecting them to local resources. Dr. Boyar completed her medical degree at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and remained at the university to serve her internship and residency at Southwestern Medical Center. She then completed her fellowship in hematology and oncology at Columbia University Medical Center.

Biography: Dr. Accordino graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor of science in Pre-medicine with minors in Health Policy and Administration and Biology. She completed her medical degree at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. While in medical school she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society which recognizes high educational achievement. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Weill Cornell Medical Center and her Medical Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow. During that time, she was awarded a Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award and Merit Award. She also served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Cancer-Related Population Sciences supported by the National Cancer Institute for her work in quality improvement and health outcomes research. Upon fellowship graduation she became an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Columbia University. Since her faculty appointment she has received grant funding from multiple agencies including: The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The HOPE Foundation, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The American Cancer Society, and the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute. Dr. Accordino is currently involved in patient care, clinical research, education, and quality improvement. Dr. Accordino's research aims to improve the quality and delivery of cancer care, and cancer survivorship. Dr. Accordino participates in clinical trials at the local, national, and international level. She also has experience leading multicenter cancer trials through the SWOG Cooperative Group. The overall goal of her research is to improve quality and outcomes within oncology.

Dr. Kato is Surgical Director of Adult and Pediatric Liver and Intestinal Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and is a professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Kato is known for unique and innovative surgeries for adults and children, including a six-organ transplant; a procedure called APOLT (auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation) that resuscitates a failing liver by attaching a partial donor liver, making immunosuppressant drugs unnecessary and the first successful human partial bladder transplantation involving the transplant of two kidneys together with ureters connected to a patch of the donor bladder. In a highly publicized case, he led the first reported removal and re-implantation, or auto-transplantation, of six organs to excise a hard-to-reach abdominal tumor. Biography: Dr. S. Sunghyun Yoon is the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology Research and Education in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Dr. Yoon is a national and international expert in the treatment of patients with sarcomas and other soft tissue tumors, gastric (stomach) and gastroesophageal cancers, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and melanoma. He also has over 18 years of experience in the treatment of other gastrointestinal and abdominal tumors, hepatobiliary tumors, neuroendocrine/adrenal tumors, lymphomas, and spleen tumors. He has been the principal investigator of several clinical trials examining novel treatment strategies and given numerous invited national and international lectures in relation to these cancers. Several of these trials have investigated the treatment of sarcomas, especially abdominal/retroperitoneal sarcomas, with advanced radiation techniques such as proton beam radiation and aggressive surgical resection to minimize local recurrence. He has one of the world's largest experiences in performing prophylactic total gastrectomies for patients with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC syndrome) secondary to germline CDH1 mutation. He pioneered a technique for connection of the small bowel to the esophagus after total gastrectomy that is used by former surgical trainees and colleagues throughout the country due to its extremely low leakage rate. Dr. Yoon graduated from Harvard University and received his M.D. from the University of California at San Diego. He completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before joining the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2012. Dr. Yoon's main research interests are in cancer stem cells and targeted biological agents in combination with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. His laboratory has been funded by the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute for 18 years and strives to translate new research discoveries into the clinic.
