Biography: I am privileged to have achieved my lifelong goal of becoming a pediatric gastroenterologist, more specifically a pediatric neurogastroenterologist. I have a special interest and expertise in disorders of the gut-brain interaction, including motility disorders, which involve the movement of food through the GI tract, and functional disorders, which involve interactions between the brain and GI tract that affect motility. These conditions can be debilitating and yet they remain challenging to treat effectively. My team and I evaluate and treat children and adolescents using advanced, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic techniques with multidisciplinary approach. Some of the conditions we treat are dysphagia, achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic nausea, gastroparesis, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic abdominal pain, severe constipation, fecal incontinence, and anorectal disorders. We think of our patients and their problems holistically and take pride in developing personal connections with patients and their families. My goal is to deliver compassionate, respectful, evidence-based, and humanistic care to children with gastrointestinal diseases. I co-direct many multidisciplinary clinics, including the Gastrointestinal Motility Center, Esophageal Atresia Clinic, Aerodigestive Program, and Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Program, and I work closely with pediatric surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, ear nose throat (ENT) specialists, psychologists, and language pathologists to provide the most comprehensive care to children with complex GI medical conditions. I also take great pride in educating medical students, residents, fellows, and other providers. I have mentored several GI fellows who have joined other institutions across the county and are currently working to establish multidisciplinary clinics and expand access to care for functional and motility disorders. In addition to my clinical and education roles, my team and I conduct multiple clinical research projects focusing on functional and motility disorders. I work on clinical trials which allow our patients to have access to therapeutics that are not otherwise offered to children. This work has led to numerous presentations at national meetings and publications in high impact gastroenterology journalsall with the mission of improving children's health and advancing the science of gastrointestinal motility and functional gastrointestinal diseases.

Biography: As a pediatric gastroenterologist, I am dedicated to improving the lives of children and adolescents with complex disorders of the gastrointestinal system. I have a special interest and clinical expertise in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. These diseases, which involve the multifaceted relationship between the immune system and GI tract, greatly affect children's and families' quality of life and impact children's growth and development. They are also often difficult to identify and treat. As director of Columbia's Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases (EGIDs) Program, my team and I offer the highest quality care to children with EGIDs, which include eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, eosinophilic enteritis, eosinophilic colitis, and oral immunotherapy associated EGIDs. I also treat children with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome and food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis of infancy. Through the multi-disciplinary EGIDs program, gastroenterologists, allergists, nutritionists, psychologists, pathologists, and social workers, as well as language pathologists, child life specialists, endocrinologists, and ENT specialists, work together to provide personalized care for each child. We incorporate the latest evidence-based advances, state-of-the-art procedures for diagnosis and management, and offer the potential to participate in clinical trials for treatment of these disorders. Our team believes in creating a medical home for each child within our center of excellence for patients, families, and providers. In addition to directing the EGIDs Program, I am a clinician-scientist and principal investigator studying esophageal development and eosinophilic esophagitis at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. It is my vision to further our understanding of eosinophilic esophagitis and to develop novel therapeutics using novel 3D organoid model systems and innovative murine models of pediatric eosinophilic esophagitis. I also have had the privilege of mentoring future physicians and junior scientists on their journey toward academic success. Several of my mentees have pursued degrees in medicine and philosophy, and have been recipients of prestigious awards.

How can patients effectively advocate for themselves during appointments with Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialists in New York, NY?
It is important to remember that you are a partner with your Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialist as you find the right treatment plan for you. You have a voice in your healthcare decisions, and it is important to communicate your goals and preferences clearly to get the highest quality of care.
Ways to advocate for yourself during appointments include: preparing questions in advance to ask your doctor, bringing someone with you to listen and take notes, asking your Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialist to clarify when you do not understand something, and being honest when you have concerns.
If you are unsure about a recommended treatment, tell your doctor you want to seek a second opinion. A quality Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialist will not take offense at this; rather, a good doctor wants to get as much information as possible to make the right treatment choice. If your Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialist does question your interest in a second opinion, it may be a sign that another Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialist may be a better fit for you.
