Biography: Dr. Joseph Jurcic is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and the Director of the Hematologic Malignancies Section within the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Biography: Dr. Hershman is an American Cancer Society Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and is the Director of Breast Oncology and co-leader of the Cancer Population Science program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University. She completed her medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed her internal medicine and oncology fellowship training at Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident. During that time she completed a Master's degree in Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health. She has developed nationally recognized expertise in breast cancer treatment, prevention, and survivorship. Biography: Dr. Ravi P. Kiran is the co-director of the Global Center for Integrated Colorectal Surgery and IBD Interventional Endoscopy at NewYork-Presbyerian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Prior to that, he served as chief and program director of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center for over a decade. He is also the Director of the Center for Innovation and Outcomes Research in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Kiran, a renowned surgeon-scientist with expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and other complicated colorectal conditions, joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was staff surgeon and head of the research section in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and director of its Rupert B. Biography: Dr. Stoopler received his Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University in 1971 and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1975. He completed his residency at North Shore University Hospital/Memorial Hospital and his oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City before joining the Columbia faculty in 1980. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the Southwest Oncology Group. Biography: Dr. Amengual is the Herbert Irving Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Center for Lymphoid Malignancies, and Hebert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center here at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Amengual obtained a degree in Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University where she graduated with honors. She attained her Medical Doctorate from New York Medical College, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Amengual then went on to complete her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the NYU Langone Medical Center, where she participated in the Physician-Scientist Training Program and graduated as a Dean's Scholar. She is the recipient of several awards and scholarships for her research, including the Irving Scholarship, the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research and as a Scholar of the Amos Medical Faculty Development Award Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Society of Hematology. She aims to translate observations and concepts developed in the laboratory directly into patient care. Specifically, she is focused on combination epigenetic targeting for both B-cell and T-cell lymphomas. She continues to develop new pharmacologic strategies directed at altering these diseases at their genetic roots, now collaborating with investigators from backgrounds of diverse scientific expertise. Dr. Amengual has been studying the effects HDAC inhibitors in combination with EZH2 inhibitors to capitalize on two common mutations driving growth of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cells. In addition, she has studied targeting the BCL6:p53 pathway in order to shift the balance of oncogene and tumor suppressor function using novel therapeutic approaches. For T-cell lymphoma Dr. Amengual has led a clinical trial combining HDAC inhibitors with the novel antifolate drug, pralatrexate. The pralatrexate plus romidepsin combination has led to dramatic responses in patients with relapsed T-cell lymphoma and will serve as the basis of more trials to come aimed at improving outcomes with patients with these diseases. Building on these discoveries, Dr. Amengual is now evaluating the interplay of epigenetics with immune surveillance and endogenous retroviral expression in the setting of lymphoma. Dr. Amengual has lectured at academic institutions and conferences around the world, and at forums such as the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the American Hematology Society's Highlights of ASH. She has published numerous chapters and peer reviewed articles on the biology and treatment of lymphoma, and serves as a Scientific Reviewer for a number of journals in the field, including Journal of Clinical Oncology and as an Editorial Board Member of Clinical Cancer Research. Studner Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University, Associate Director for Population Science, Leader of the Prevention, Control, and Disparities Program for the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia, and Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital Dr. Neugut is a medical oncologist with a particular interest in gastroIntestinal tract cancers, especially of colorectal and gasteric cancers. Under the auspices of Columbia's MD/PhD program, he received his MD and a PhD in Pathobiology in 1977. He did his training in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He returned to Columbia University as an Andrew Mellon Fellow in Epidemiology and Medicine to obtain an MPH in Epidemiology in 1983. Dr. Neugut then joined the faculty at Columbia University with appointments in Medicine and Epidemiology. As both a practicing medical oncologist and cancer epidemiologist, Dr. Alfred Neugut's major interests have been on GI tract cancers, notably the epidemiology of colorectal adenomas and cancer, as well as colonoscopic screening. He serves as co-principal investigator of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, a large multi-center effort to explore environmental causes of breast cancer on Long Island. Most recently, his efforts have focused on more clinical topics, such as the epidemiology of second malignancies and the use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy among elderly cancer patients. Dr. Neugut focuses a great deal on racial disparities in incidence and survival from cancer and, in particular, variations across subgroups of people of African descent. He leads two large training grants in cancer-related population sciences that together fund 15 pre and postdoctoral trainees in cancer epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health sciences, and serves as a mentor to a number of junior faculty.

Biography: Dr. Raza is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York, NY. She started her research in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in 1982 and moved to Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1992, where she was the Charles Arthur Weaver Professor in Oncology and Director, Division of Myeloid Diseases. The MDS Program, along with a Tissue Repository containing more than 50,000 samples from MDS and acute leukemia patients was successfully relocated to the University of Massachusetts in 2004 and to Columbia University in 2010. Before moving to New York, Dr. Raza was the Chief of Hematology Oncology and the Gladys Smith Martin Professor of Oncology at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. Biography: Dr. Emond is the Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University. He has over 30 years of experience performing liver transplantation and complex liver and biliary surgery in children and adults, including the first living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the United States. Dr. Emond has published extensively in this field and was the co-chair of the NIH A2ALL program for 13 years. In collaboration with the department of Medicine at Columbia, Dr. Emond recruited the leadership of the Columbia Center for Translational immunology that created the foundation for translational and clinical research in transplantation tolerance. This will lead the way to inducing transplant tolerance in liver patients with the mixed chimerism strategy. As Director of Transplantation at the Columbia University Medical Center Dr. Emond's activities foster clinical excellence and research across all 11 of the solid organ transplant programs at the Medical Center. In recognition of his national and international leadership in transplantation, Dr. Emond is the past president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the pre-eminent association of a transplant surgery. Contribution to Science Living donor liver transplantation Dr. Emond has spent a substantial portion of his career developing living donor liver transplantation and studying the safety of the procedure in both the donor and recipient. He participated in the first living donor liver transplant in the United States and focused on refining the techniques of performing living donor liver transplants and split liver transplants. He was the national co-chair of the NIH-sponsored Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation (A2ALL) consortium from 2002 to 2015 to study the safety and outcomes of living donor liver transplants. Hepatic resection/ischemia Dr. Emond developed techniques for surgical resection of liver tumors and studied the effect of ischemia during resection on postoperative liver function. These studies include the outcomes of the extent of hepatectomy, the biochemical response to major hepatectomy and ischemia-reperfusion injury of the liver in rodent models. He has studied the clinical safety of inducing total vascular exclusion to provide a bloodless field during the liver transection. This has applications in both liver cancer and living donor hepatectomies. Hepatocellular carcinoma treatment Dr. Emond has studied many aspects of managing patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. These studies have included characterizing the risk factors for recurrence of disease following transplantation due to comorbidities and tumor characteristics. The research team has also studied the optimal method of preventing tumor growth in patients with HCC on the liver transplant wait list in addition to optimal strategies of liver allocation to optimize outcomes following liver transplantation. These studies have contributed to proposed changes in UNOS exception point allocation for liver transplant candidates with HCC. Biography: Prakash Satwani, MD specializes in the use of bone marrow transplantation to treat children and adolescents with leukemia, lymphoma, or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Bone marrow transplantation is a dynamic, intriguing field with multiple complex issues. Dr. Satwani has always enjoyed solving puzzles and is attracted to the intellectual challenge of caring for patients whose lives may be saved or extended with bone marrow transplantation. Dr. Satwani is also inspired and motivated by the long-lasting and rich relationships formed with patients and their families, and often keeps in touch with families long after their child's treatment has been completed. Dr. Satwani teaches medical students, residents, fellows, nurses, and nurse practitioners about bone marrow transplantation. It's important to educate people so they can learn the latest advances and provide the best care possible for patients. To continue to achieve those advances, Dr. Satwani conducts clinical research in reducing the life-threatening complications related to transplantation, such as infections and graft-versus-host disease. Biography: Diane George, MD cares for children and adolescents undergoing stem cell transplantation as a treatment for cancer (particularly leukemia and lymphoma), noncancerous blood disorders (like sickle cell anemia), and immunodeficiencies. She specializes in transplantation for patients who don't have a related bone marrow donor, and also takes care of patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation for solid tumors. Dr. George was originally attracted to the field of pediatric oncology because she wanted to take on the challenge of fighting pediatric cancer, and stem cell transplantation offers the ultimate cure in select patients. It is a complex medical field, and Dr. George enjoys being able to take care of children with complex medical conditions. Dr. George also conducts clinical research. She is currently evaluating a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) - a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach benefits patients who do not have a well-matched family donor, and it could potentially make bone marrow transplantation an option for more patients. Dr. George is also interested in studying how a patient's immune system rebuilds itself after CD34-selected stem cell transplantation. Biography: Maria Garzon, M.D. is Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Dermatology at NYP Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. With a significant body of published research, leadership and teaching experience, Dr. Garzon is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric dermatology. She is a leading expert on the care of children and adolescents with vascular anomalies, particularly hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Dr. Garzon is the Founder and Co-Director of the NYP/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (NYP/CUIMC) Interdisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Group, a founding member and past President of the Hemangioma Investigator Group (HIG) and a founding member of the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA). Biography: Meghna S. Trivedi, MD, MS cares for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Dr. Trivedi received her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and completed her residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to complete her fellowship in hematology/oncology at Columbia University. Dr. Trivedi co-leads the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Program, a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary initiative aimed at screening, preventing, diagnosing, and treating hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. This innovative program brings together the resources of a world-renowned academic institution, including cutting-edge genomic testing, clinical trials, and experts in hereditary cancers across different specialties. Dr. Trivedi's research and care expertise also includes cancer genetics and genomics, precision medicine, and chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy. She is the principal investigator on several clinical trials, and has authored numerous publications in leading peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Trivedi is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and SWOG.

Biography: Dr. William Middlesworth joined the medical staff of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia (MSCHONY), Division of Pediatric Surgery in 1997. He currently serves as director of the Pediatric ECMO Program, and Residency Program Director of the Pediatric Surgical Fellowship. Dr. Middlesworth has founded and leads the Pediatric Thyroid Center and the REACH (Researching Esophageal Atresia for Children's Health) Clinic. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Middlesworth spent two years in the Genetics Department at the Boston Children's Hospital on work leading to the identification and characterization of the dystrophin gene, important in the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy. He went on to medical school at Rutgers University, and completed his general surgery training at the University of Maryland Medical System. During residency he spent a year as a surgical research fellow at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. His pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at MSCHONY. In addition to the responsibilities listed above, Dr. Middlesworth serves on numerous hospital and university committees focused on Quality and Patient Safety, and is the Quality Chair for Columbia Department of Surgery. He is the Surgeon Champion at the Columbia campus for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) of the American College of Surgeons. He chairs a multi-institution collaborative to reduce harm and enhance safety in the peri-operative setting that is sponsored by MCIC Vermont, the member-owned malpractice insurance carrier for Columbia, Cornell, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine, University of Rochester Medicine and Yale. Dr. Middlesworth is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Biography: Mariam El-Ashmawy, MD PhD is a medical oncologist andtranslational scientist with specialization in the treatment of advanced skincancer and ocular melanoma. Her research investigates the complex geneticlandscape of cancer in order to develop new therapies. In the laboratory, her work has been dedicated to understanding the complex genomic landscape of cancer and developing novel targeted therapeutic strategies. Her ongoing projects include testing novel RAS pathway inhibitors in preclinical models of gastric and esophageal cancer as well as a first-in-human clinical trials for patients with NRAS mutant melanoma.

Biography: Dr. Sathe completed her Residency in Internal Medicine at NYP/Weill Cornell and is a graduate of Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School. She also holds a JD from Columbia Law School. Her research focuses on improving cancer care delivery and reducing disparities in treatment and outcomes.

Biography: Monica Bhatia, MD specializes in the care of children with noncancerous blood disorders who may benefit from bone marrow transplantation, especially sickle cell anemia. She and her colleagues are working to reduce the toxicity (side effects) and complications of this treatment without compromising its effectiveness, and to make it available to more patients. The field of pediatric hematology brings with it many intellectual challenges, and bone marrow transplantation in particular is especially dynamic. Dr. Bhatia has the opportunity to provide care for the sickest children, potentially curing their disease. She builds strong relationships with her patients and their families that last for years. It is inspiring for her to see young patients grow up to lead healthy, productive lives. NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a robust program for bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell anemia - the only cure for this disease. Dr. Bhatia and her team have witnessed remarkable results among children who are cured with bone marrow transplantation and spared from the potentially life-threatening complications of sickle cell disease. Yet despite the advances made, only 15 percent of patients with sickle cell disease have a matched sibling bone marrow donor. Therefore, Dr. Bhatia and her team conduct research to evaluate a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow for patients without a matched sibling donor. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach to harnessing stem cells could potentially make bone marrow transplantation a safer, effective option for many patients who are seeking a cure for sickle cell disease. Dr. Bhatia and her colleagues are currently assessing reduced-intensity transplantation, which uses lower doses of chemotherapy to decrease the risk of side effects and long-term complications without lowering the effectiveness of treatment. She is also interested in looking for ways to further improve the quality of life of patients who have had a bone marrow transplant in addition to fertility preservation.

Biography: James H. Garvin, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist who specializes in the care of children and adolescents with brain tumors. He is Principal Investigator at CUMC for the Head Start Program of radiation-sparing intensive chemotherapy for infants and young children with brain tumors. He was principal investigator for a Children's Oncolgy Group protocol for childhood ependymoma. He also offers novel therapies for recurrent brain tumors through our program's membership in Developmental Therapeutics Program of the COG. In addition, Dr. Garvin started the pediatric bone marrow transplant program, and continues as a member of the BMT group. He has particular interest in autologous transplant for brain tumors and allogeneic transplant for metabolic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes, as well as supportive care for BMT patients. Dr. Garvin became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology through research during medical school in the laboratory of a pediatric hematologist. He is a member of numerous professional societies in the field.

I work closely with our multidisciplinary team of expert thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, palliative care/pain management specialists, and nutritionists to provide comprehensive care for our patients. He has a special interest in using the latest bioinformatics techniques to study how cancer cells change and adapt during treatment. Utilizing these genomic insights, he hopes to better inform clinical trials and hasten the development of innovative therapies for patients with hematologic malignancies.Dr. Lipsky earned his medical degree from Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical College, with an additional sub-fellowship in the clinical care of CLL and lymphoma.
