Biography: Preston Waldrop, MD, FAAOS, a board-certified and fellowship trained surgeon with LewisGale Physicians in Salem, Virginia has provided care to residents in the Roanoke Valley for more than 32 years. He grew up in Salem and returned with his family in 1991 to practice orthopedics. Dr. Waldrop's medical training began at the University of Virginia, followed by orthopedic training at Emory University in Atlanta. To further his knowledge in orthopedics, Dr. Waldrop participated in a fellowship in shoulder/sports medicine at the University of Miami. Dr. Waldrop also maintains the honor of being a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Waldrop chose to focus his practice on orthopedics because it gives him the ability to treat patients of all ages and life stages. In addition, orthopedics allows him to treat a specific problem and usually make a significant improvement in a patient's life which is very gratifying. Dr. Waldrop's major interests in orthopedics include treatment of the shoulder, knee, and hip with surgeries varying from arthroscopy to joint replacement. Dr. Waldrop has been a perennial fixture on The Roanoker magazine "Top Docs" list for more than a decade. He is consistently voted as one of the area's top orthopedic surgeons and general orthopedists by a survey of his peers and nursing staff, receiving awards in 2006, 2008, and every year from 2011 onward. Biography: Robyn Hakanson, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon in Salem, Virginia.Dr. Hakanson graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC. She completed a one-year internship and a four-year orthopedic surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a one-year adult reconstruction and sports medicine fellowship at Insall Scott Kelly Institute in New York, New York.As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hakanson specializes in sports medicine, total joint replacements (hip, knee, and shoulder), partial knee replacement, arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery, knee ligament reconstruction, autologous chondrocyte implantation, rotator cuff repair, fracture repair, and joint injections. She is board-certified by the America Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and an active Fellow with the American Associate of Hip and Knee Surgeons.Dr. Hakanson has more than 30 years experience in sports medicine. She has provided medical care for teams including Davidson College Women's Basketball, the Charlotte Sting, the New York Knicks, the New York Liberty, the New York Yankees, University of Northern Colorado Football, and Mount Airy High School Football.Dr. Hakanson is married with three children. Patterson, MD, is an Orthopedic Surgeon with LewisGale Physicians who has served the Southwest Virginia community for over ten years. Dr. Patterson graduated with honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology earning a bachelor of science in Microbiology and a certificate in Industrial Psychology. Following his undergraduate work, he earned his medical doctorate at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. He completed two residencies, the first in internal medicine at University of South Carolina and the second in orthopedic surgery at University of Florida-Shands, Jacksonville. Dr. Patterson also achieved a fellowship in orthopedic adult reconstruction at OrthoCarolina, in Charlotte. Dr. Patterson is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). He has more than 16 years of experience in all areas of Orthopedics, specializing in hip and knee reconstructions, both primary and revision. Dr. Patterson has a passion for teaching and has taught students, residents and fellows. He also participates on the Christian Education Committee at his church.In addition to his established patients, Dr. Patterson has offered his medical expertise on several international missions including Peru, Venezuela, Zambia, and Haiti. When not treating patients, Dr. Patterson enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, as well as fishing, running, and coaching little league soccer.
