He studied biochemistry at the University of Missouri Columbia, then attended medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado. While in Denver, Dr. Smith was awarded the Golden Apple Teaching award as a Chief Resident.
