After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Harvard University, Dr. Ritter went on to attend medical school in New York City at Mount Sinai University Medical Center completing his medical degree in 1981. His medical training continued with a residency in general surgery at Brown University in Rhode Island at Rhode Island Hospital and a subsequent fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He went on to complete a flexible rotating internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem Pennsylvania for one year. He then went on to complete a general surgery residency for six years at the Robert Packer Hospital/ Guthrie clinic in Sayre, Pennsylvania. He then completed a colorectal surgery residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
