Biography: Karan Dua, MD is an Orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of structures affecting the form and function of the entire arm. Karan is a Brooklyn native, and a proud member of the New York community. After earning his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from Stony Brook University School of Medicine, he completed an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He has dedicated his career to studying and training in the surgical management of the Upper Extremity. He first completed a Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Upon completion, he trained at Harvard Medical School for his Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. Karan is on the forefront of researching and designing innovative, novel surgical techniques for reconstructing the arm. He has an avid interest in open and arthroscopic tendon transfers of the shoulder, complex reconstructions after failed surgery, arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques for nerve decompression including the brachial plexus and around the shoulder blade, and tendon transfers for scapular winging. Karan is a passionate researcher and writer. He has been awarded multiple research grants studying wrist and elbow reconstruction techniques, nerve gliding in the upper extremity, and continues to pursue these efforts at Columbia University. He has published over 30 peer reviewed journal articles, authored several book chapters in leading Orthopedic surgery textbooks, and presented his research at national and international conferences. Dr. Dua is a participating member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). Karan strives to help his patients achieve their functional goals and works rigorously to improve their experience. Biography: Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health proudly welcome Dr. Anil Nanda as Peter W. Carmel M.D. Chair of Neurological Surgery and professor and chair, Department of Neurosurgery, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and senior vice president for neurosurgical services, RWJBarnabas Health. Internationally renowned for his clinical, research and academic achievements, Dr. Nanda was professor and founding chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center—Shreveport. Over the 27 years of his leadership, the department's reputation grew exponentially, becoming internationally known not only for its expertise and Dr. Nanda's vision, but also its residency training program, which he launched in 2003. He was also instrumental in building the department's Gamma Knife Radiosurgery and Neuroendovascular programs. Dr. Nanda has been recognized as a global leader in neurosurgery and serves as second vice president for the World Federation of Neurological Societies. He has held significant leadership roles in professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, for which he serves as Secretary;the North American Skull Base Society (past president); Southern Neurosurgical Society (past president); the Society of University Neurosurgeons (past president); and the Society of Neurological Surgeons (past vice president), as well as many others at state, national and international levels. Dr. Nanda also serves as director and vice chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). With more than 16,000 surgeries, 2,000 of which were performed for skull base tumors and aneurysms, Dr. Nanda is considered an expert in several advanced neurosurgical techniques. He specializes in skull base,vascular and spinal neurosurgery, including Gamma Knife radiosurgery. He has been included among the Best Doctors in America list consecutively from 1996 through 2018. A highly regarded lecturer and visiting professor at national and international conferences, with hundreds of presentations to his credit, Dr. Nanda has published more than 460 articles and 45 commentaries inpeer-reviewed and professional journals, as well as authored four books, including the recently published Complications in Neurosurgery, and four dozen book chapters. He currently serves as a reviewer on more than two dozen peer-reviewed journals. A New York native, Dr. Nanda earned his medical degree with honors from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Madras University, in India. He completed an internshipin surgical oncology from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, followed by a residency in general surgery at Rush–Presbyterian–St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago (now Rush University Medical Center) and in neurosurgery at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He completed fellowship trainingin microneurosurgery and cranial base surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. In 2012, Dr. Nanda earned his Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. As part of his curriculum, he helped pass the Louisiana Youth Concussion Law, requiring all schools, clubs an dother organizations that sponsor youth athletics to provide athletes and their parents with information about concussion and the potential long-term effects of playing after a head injury. In 2017, he was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters by Centenary College and gave its commencement address.
