He received his undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill and his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine. His internship was at Johns Hopkins/Sinai Hospital, and his residency and fellowship were at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. He was also chief resident/assistant chief of service and director of ocular trauma at the Wilmer Eye Institute. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Medical Association.
