Biography: Dr. Alfredo Rego is an established and highly skilled physician with more than 20 years of experience in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He is well regarded in the South Florida community, earning numerous accolades for his high quality and patient-centered care. Dr. Rego has been named as one of America's Top Surgeons in Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery from 2007 to 2016. He has earned multiple physician dedication awards for outstanding service, leadership and clinical outcomes. Under his direction and leadership, two new open-heart programs have been established in the Miami-Dade community. Along with his full-time clinical practice, Dr. Rego also dedicates a significant amount of time to research and participates in numerous clinical trials to further enhance the quality of care for his patients.Dr. Rego was born in Guatemala and received his undergraduate degree from the English American College. He then earned his doctor of medicine degree with honors from the University of San Carlos School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1984. After earning a highly coveted scholarship from the McNicholas Foundation, attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his doctorate in cardiovascular physiology and biophysics with honors. During his graduate tenure, Dr. Rego was awarded a postdoctoral national research service award from the National Institutes of Health and also won awards from the American Heart Association, American Physiological Society and The Porter Development Committee for his research in endothelial cell physiology and pharmacology of EDRF.Dr. Rego completed general and vascular surgery training at The Ohio State University Hospitals in 1996, and Fellowship training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and transplantation at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics in 1999. Dr. Rego holds certification by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Additionally, he has been elected to membership and fellowship in the most esteemed organizations in his field, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians and other national and international organizations.Dr. Rego serves as a clinical professor of surgery in the medical school faculty at Nova Southeastern University and Florida International University. Due to his extensive knowledge, Dr. Rego has participated in many meeting presentations with other specialists in his field. He also has published several book chapters and reviews, along with many peer-reviewed manuscripts. All of these experiences have contributed to making Dr. Rego into the advanced innovative cardiac surgeon and leader he is today.
