Biography: Clarence H. Owen, MD, is a board certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon caring for patients in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Owen studied at Duke University where he received both bachelor of science (1985) and doctor of medicine(1989) degrees. He remained at Duke University where he completed his entire surgical training including residencies in both general and cardiothoracic surgery as well as a research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. Upon completion of his training in 1998 he went into private practice in Greensboro, North Carolina where he practiced until 2022. He dedicated his practice to adult cardiac surgery, developing particular expertise in coronary artery revascularization, heart valve repair and replacement, mitral valve repair, minimally-invasive cardiac surgery, and structural heart disease. In 2009 he launched the minimally-invasive heart valve program at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital where he completed more than 400 mitral valve procedures using port access techniques. He briefly traveled to Germany in 2013 to gain experience with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and helped launch a very successful TAVR program the following year, serving as co-director of the Structural Heart Valve Program at the Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center from 2013 through 2022. In addition, he developed extensive experience with the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, performing the maze procedure using both conventional sternotomy and minimally-invasive techniques. In 2022 he returned to Florida and joined HCA Florida Healthcare and dedicated his practice to the service of patients in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Owen is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and family as well as numerous outdoor activities.

Care Philosophy: Ion Botnaru, MD is a fellowship-trained cardiologist with board certifications in cardiology, interventional cardiology, and nuclear cardiology. He has an additional board certification as a cardiac device specialist (IBHRE) and is a registered physician in ultrasound interpretation (RPVI). Dr. Botnaru focuses on reduction of cardiovascular risk and has special training in pacemaker, coronary stent and loop recorder implantation. Dr. Botnaru believes that in order to successfully treat his patients, he must help them achieve a full understanding of their disease and options. As a result, patients feel fully heard and confident in the care they receive. In his spare time, Dr. Botnaru enjoys spending time with his family, reading, swimming and traveling. He is also fluent in English and Russian.

Biography: Thomas Mathews, MD is Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology, and received his medical degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mathews completed an Internship and a Residency in Internal Medicine at Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, followed by a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology/Cardiology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, University.
