Biography: Douglas Andrew Woelkers, MD, is a board-certified perinatologist who specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for pregnant women who have an increased chance that they or their babies will have health concerns. Dr. Woelkers’ expertise includes preeclampsia, thrombophilia and placental insufficiency. As an associate professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Woelkers instructs medical students, residents and fellows. Dr. Woelkers has co-authored numerous abstracts and articles, and his work has appeared in The Journal of Pediatrics and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, among others. He completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Magee-Women’s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Biography: Richard B. Wolf, DO, is a board-certified perinatologist who specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for pregnant women who have an increased chance that they or their babies will have health concerns. Dr. Wolf’s expertise includes fetal imaging, amniotic fluid abnormalities, blood clotting disorders during pregnancy and blood group (Rh) incompatibility. His most important goal is helping patients understand the complexities of pregnancy complications and working with them to achieve as happy and healthy a pregnancy as possible. As a professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Wolf instructs medical students, residents and fellows. He has also given lectures on various high-risk pregnancy topics at local and national conferences. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Wolf served as an OB/GYN physician and perinatologist physician in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Naval Hospital in Oakland, California, and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. Dr. Wolf earned his medical degree from Des Moines University.He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal and fetal medicine. Biography: Louise C. Laurent, MD, PhD, is a board-certified perinatologist who specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for pregnant women who have an increased chance that they or their babies will have health concerns. Dr. Laurent’s expertise is in treating women who are at risk for preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction. Dr. Laurent is the director of perinatal research and an assistant professor in the Department of Reproductive Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. As a physician-scientist, her research uses stem cells to understand early development, including early placental development. She has led several National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical trials that investigate extracellular RNA for predicting and diagnosing pregnancy-associated disorders, such as placental dysfunction. Dr. Laurent has co-authored book chapters, textbooks and many peer-reviewed articles, and her work has been published in Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine and Cell Stem Cell, among others. She completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Laurent earned her medical degree and doctoral degree in biochemistry from UC San Francisco. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal and fetal medicine. Biography: Derek Helton, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist and medical director of cancer services at our Encinitas and Vista locations. He specializes in the treatment of a broad range of solid tumor malignancies and benign and malignant blood disorders. He has a special interest in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile duct and anal cancers.Dr. Helton’s current research involves in clinical trials in gastrointestinal oncology. He has presented research on a variety of subjects, including sarcomas, myelodysplastic syndromes and leukemia.Dr. Helton is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. During his medical training, he completed a hematology and medical oncology fellowship at UC Los Angeles and Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where he received recognition as the Most Outstanding Medical Subspecialty Fellow two years in a row. He completed his internship and served as chief resident during his residency at UC San Diego. He earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University.
