Very positive experience
He explained my options to me for a wrist fracture and didn’t push me one way or the other. Very direct which I appreciated.

Saw the NP.
Went to the office to see Dr. Alter. I was seen by his NP. She was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. My only concern was that I only saw the Dr. for about 20 seconds. I would have liked him to spend more time explaining my condition with me. Dr. Alter was pleasant during our short interaction.

Dismissive, arrogant, doesn't listen to concerns.
Visit was rushed. He's in and out before I can ask any questions. Speaks with a condescending tone.

Dr Alter was efficient and knowledgeable.
After being told my hand was fine by different orthopedic, Dr Alter diagnosed nerve damage and scheduled surgery two days later. In surgery more damage was discovered. Very grateful I was in Dr Alter’s experienced hands, no pun intended.

Dismissive, gives an impression of not listening
My teen children have seen Dr. Alter multiple times. For the first, very basic injury, the visits were brief and straightforward, and gave us no pause to return with the more complex injury a year later. This injury was rare, and had been correctly diagnosed in an ER, but Dr. Alter wanted to confirm it for himself, which is completely understandable. However, he was dismissive of what the patient described as having happened in the ER and insisted it wasn’t possible, even though we’d witnessed it on 3D X-ray, and he couldn’t recreate it for Dr Alter to witness without significant pain (dislocating and relocating a joint simply by rotating it) and risk of additional injury. Dr Alter agreed to carry out the recommended treatment (cast and periodic X-rays), since the diagnosing doctor was a 40 minute drive, but felt dismissed and talked down to at each visit, and ultimately returned to the other practice to complete the treatment, despite bi-weekly 1.5 hour commutes. We won’t return.

Highly recommend Dr.Alter
I was involved in a motor vehicle accident, causing severe damage to my hand and wrist. I am so thankful I was referred to Dr. Alter. Without Dr. Alter, I don’t if I would have functioning hand today. The surgery was long and complex but very successful. A year later, Dr. Alter is still supporting me and my rehab. He is not just an amazing surgeon, he also always puts his patients first.

Great care
Dr. Alter is an excellent doctor! We couldn’t have had a better doctor taking care of my mother. He took care of getting OT & PT through Tufts care at home and answered all of our questions. When we would arrive at the office everyone was caring and friendly. We would wait no longer than 5 minutes at the most to be called in. We highly recommend Dr. Alter.

Got the care I needed.
This journey started at one of the more prominent orthopedic facilities in New Hampshire that really dropped the ball. Got a word of mouth recommendation and made an appt. Busy spot, so it's in the best interest to get there early. A quick xray (along with my MRI disc)set the table for Dr. Alter, as well as his fantastic RN-Assistant who jumped in when things were getting busy. She was great in explaining everything, while not the greatest of news, she took the time to ease me and show her extensive knowledge. Dr. Alter came in a few minutes later and basically confirmed everything, which once again, leaves you in a better place, knowing I got solid diagnosis, and coupled with a prognosis that will have be returning for the follow up with options explained.

Great Doctor
Dr Alter was amazing. Very knowledgable . Some might like a more personable Dr, I want a good technical Dr that has great knowledge and expects hard work from the patient to get them back to normal.

not happy with him-bad medical advice
I went in with an xray of a broken ankle and a referral from my PCP. I was in pain and he spent 3 min with me and said we will just say you have tendonitis! I asked about wearing the boot (which didnt fit!) and when and he said “whenever you feel like it”. no specifics and super vague! Awful manner with me. Yet he went into the patient across the hall and spent plenty of time with him since he rushed out of my visit. I got a second opinion and myankle fracture was treated appropriately. Bad doctor!! stay away!

Not trust worthy
He wanted to do a shoulder replacement on my 89 year old mother in poor health. Also, I was scheduled to have surgery by Dr. Alter and he cancelled my surgery without telling me. I had to find out when I went to my pre-op hospital appointment. At the time I was seeing an oncologist. Which proved to be nothing. The oncologist cleared me for surgery. However, after speaking with Dr. Alter receptionist, she claimed Dr. Alter spoke with the oncologist and he, oncologist, didn't clear me. After speaking with the oncologist, he said he NEVER denied clearing me. Dr. Alter LIED. He's is not trust worthy. If he lied about that, what else would he lie about. I would not recommend.

Best Orthopedic doc
I have had the pleasure of being treated by Dr Alter for both a car accident and a freak accident where a vase nearly cut my finger off. He was correct in his treatment both times and any of these bad reviews it's probably on them because he really is the best and he knows what he's doing. He's great. Furthermore I was misdiagnosed at the Mass general and he figured it out before they did.

Does not spend any time with patients
I saw Dr. Alter for a fractured hand. In the many visits I made to his office, he gave me little to no information (usually handed me a brochure), he never asked me how I was feeling, and he usually lets his assistant do most of the appointment who is unfortunately similarly brief. They are pulling so many people through that they have no time to spend on anyone. To this office, you are just a number, and you'll get no information or compassion. I would not recommend him at all.

Dr. Alter went on and above to repair my shoulder
Dr Alter saw me at his office after I fell at work. He told me I would most likely need a reverse shoulder procedure, but if during surgery he thought he could repair my own shoulderd, he would try to do the best he could for me. Well, he did repair my shoulder during the surgery. I went home one day after surgery and went back to work sooner than expected. I am very grateful for his care. My last visit was today. I do not have to go back.
