Bad broken ankle experience with Dr. Johnsen
I broke my ankle in February. I chose Steen Johnsen to do the surgery. First, I was never told that I would never see the doctor again after the surgery. So I did not know how the surgery went. Then when I went in for a postop appointment to have staples taken out, I was told they had vacations when I was supposed to come in next. They wanted to keep my cast on 6 weeks past when it was to be taken off. Dr Johnsen was too booked to see me for extra 6 weeks past the 5 weeks post surgery to have cast removed. After several calls a day for almost 2 weeks trying to get an appointment, I had to switch doctors to someone outside Banner as Banner would not let me see any other doctor postop. When Dr Johnsen finally called me to explain, he tried to tell me its ok for a cast to be left on 7 weeks past when it was to come off. He told me he is busy and hung up.

Total Ankle replacement
Staff was helpful and he did explain things well. Unfortunately I had a prior surgery with staples in my ankle. I was glad he was the only doctor willing to remove them, however it turned out to be a bad decision. My ankle replacement post in my tibia was off three degrees. My talus eventually collapsed and I was in great pain for two years. I had to have his surgery fixed by a top Orthopedic surgeon. My taus had toBe replaced with a titanium one. I still have pain, but not as bad. I would not recommend him for total ankle replacement surgery.

Is he a good dr., who knows
New patient, 2 week wait for appointment. Sat in the waiting room for and hour and a half, an hour past appointment time, and they decide they have to cancel. It's one thing to wonder about their medical qualifications but if they aren't courteous you may never get to find out. He certainly doesn't care.

Zero compassion, no info on management, no ACE
First Dr. Johnson visit 1-month post right ankle fall. I've never broken a bone in my life, but I have twisted my ankle. I've also experienced a right knee tear, which sounded a lot like what I heard when I fell on my ankle. I assumed my ankle tendons were torn and convalesced at home for about 3.5-weeks. The entire visit took near 2-hours. Patients hobbling in and out the entire morning while I waited. I waited over an hour just to see him. When he came in, he asked how I fell and how I cared for it at home. I started to explain to him that I was following a protocol I found online with heat and massage and he stopped me mi-sentence to ask, 'You know it's broken, right?' 'Well, no I don't...that's why I'm here.' He proceeded to review my x-ray and recommended an MRI. He called it a Weber 2, which sometimes requires surgery - dependent on the imaging. He almost forgot to assess my ankle but never wrapped it, nor asked me how I was immobilizing it. Left his office sad.

Very caring and helpful
Dr. Johnsen is wonderful! He is a very kind, caring, doctor who has been a great help with my ankles and knees. He’s interested in conservative treatments before doing surgery. When I did actually need ankle surgery, he did an excellent job. My broken ankle repair returned it to full range of motion and I have no pain. His staff have also been very helpful and caring. Thank you Dr. Johnsen.

Excuse the lengthy review, but there's a lot to be said. I visited Dr. Johnsen at TOCA Banner Health for a second opinion. I explained to Dr. Johnsen that I previously had a negative experience with a different orthopedist and was in need of some answers. He and his staff seemed very knowledgeable and kind. I underwent a very painful and very invasive procedure. They were very professional and assured me that the copay I paid in the office would be the only expense I would be responsible for. They also assured me that I would receive the very important test results arising from the procedure in a matter of days. I would've given them zero stars if not for this initial experience. Things rapidly declined after that visit. I did not receive my results in the time frame they assured me I would. I attempted to call them multiple times across several days to ask about my results. His staff routinely gave me the run around. They placed me on hold up to 45 minutes at a time only to give me zero answers when I finally spoke to someone. I eventually thought to e-mail Dr. Johnsen himself about the results after hearing nothing from his staff about it. Before hearing back from Dr. Johnsen, I received an additional bill from his office despite being expressly told by his staff that I would not be responsible for any additional expenses from my one visit. I later received an e-mail from Dr. Johnsen explaining to me that the lab not only conducted the wrong test on the sample they sent, but they also destroyed the sample. Dr. Johnsen offered to have me come back in for another procedure, but the window for conducting the procedure had lapsed. I received no apologies or conciliatory efforts from Dr. Johnsen or his staff outside of that. I contacted the billing department with Banner and asked that they waive the additional amount they charged me in light of the colossal mistake Dr. Johnsen and the lab made. I explained that they were essentially hitting me with a surprise bill when I didn't even receive the service I was promised. I also explained that I was told I would not be responsible for any additional costs. Banner did not care. They demanded that I pay and explained that the lab was at fault. I contacted the lab, and they explained that all they could do was waive the ~$20 lab fee in light of the mistake. They told me this could only happen if Dr. Johnsen explained that a mistake was made to them. I again e-mailed Dr. Johnsen and asked him to waive the additional amount Banner charged me as a courtesy in light of the wringer they put me through. I e-mailed him multiple times and was ignored each time. It's been weeks and I've still heard nothing from anyone. Do not go to Dr. Johnsen. Save yourself the pain, anxiety, and money.

Almost died
I had a tiny ligament tear repaired by Dr. Steen Johnson . On May 17, i was rushed to the emergency room at the Mayo Hospital near death with extensive blood clots in my surgical leg and bilateral pulmonary embolism in both lungs, and rushed to surgery to have a filter placed to prevent a large clot from traveling to my heart., which would have immediately killed me... I was admitted for several days and put on permanent blood thinner for the rest of my life at $560 a month, my leg is permanently injured with chronic swelling, redness and pain, and my life has dramatically been limited . Dr. Johnson did not give me a preventative blood thinner, and delayed my care by telling me i didn't have a blood clot when i i complained about extreme groin pain, leg swelling and foot turning purple, in his office. .. Even though the SMILE radiologist informed Dr. Johnson of serious condition, he never called to check up on me not once...No compassion for his patient. We're all shocked! .

i saw steen Johnsen md on 3-5-21 for an ankle injury. a boot was issued, surgery was discussed, i was told to not weight bear & an mri was ordered; mri results were in my portal on 3-10-21. i called his office 3-11, 3-12, 3-15 & 3-23 with no return calls. each time i was told their office had 72 hours to return a call. that's a pretty low bar but even that wasn't met. i sent a letter on 3-21 & received no response. on 3-24 i called again & my call was referred to a supervisor who called me back. he was polite & apologetic & offered to have me seen the following day. however, no one has been able to explain why my calls were not returned or why i wasn't contacted when my results were in my file. a patient shouldn't have to call following diagnostic testing; the dr's staff should immediately contact the patient. in the meantime, i chose to see a different ortho who's office returns calls in a timely manner & who feels i can recover without surgery & while weight bearing.

Extremely grateful that Dr. Johnsen took the time to do x-rays and a MRI on my ankle. I had spent 5 years with escalating pain. A year with a Podiatrist just receiving steroid injects. Band-aids as it turned out. Thank for the educated professional assessment and the surgery which made a great difference. Your office staff handles appointments and COVID safety well. Your Physician Assistant is excellent as well. Your casting person is extremely competent and efficient. Again thank you.
