Dr. Mays is excellent and very smart doctor
Dr. Mays is the best psychiatrist I have ever seen in my 25 years of needing one. He is the most knowledgeable about medications and he slowly takes you off and on them. I hope he never moves or retires. He is great at responding and makes you a priority if you need him. I don't know what I would do without him.

I have been seeing Dr. May's for a long time.
Telehealth
Dr. May's is always excellent at answering my questions. We talk about my issues and he addresses them. He also asks me questions so I can have input as to how to handle my situation. He is very knowable about medications and explains why meds are changed or a different dosage is given. He always schedules my next appointment at the end of my appointment. I do telehealth but can ask for in office visits if I feel it is necessary. I would not change doctors and will be sad if he ever has to stop practicing (health issues, or retirement).

DEFINITELY the BEST
Best psychiatrist I have ever had. I am in need of a prescription & have contacted the assistant 3 times in the last week & 1/2, the pharmacy has called his office 7 times, I spoke to the operator this afternoon & she said they were just reqested today. I need a script, My anxiety is off the wall, I am truly hoping for the script tomorrow. He has always been extremely prompt. I wouldn't think he would ignore if he was notified! Like I said, he is the best!!!

Hands down…THE best!
Dr. Mays has worked with my family since 2001. Extremely knowledgable, very good with complicated cases, expert at getting meds just right for each individual, very compassionate, extended hours, really listens, and very responsive. In recent years (since 2021), many problems with office staff, but he is worth the trouble. (Except for Paula at the front desk/scheduling… she’s a long-timer and is great!) He seems very quiet, but his brain is working in overdrive during appointments. Hilariously dry sense of humor and very personable once you get to know him. He saved my son’s life many times. I work in mental health field and have referred many people to Dr. Mays with great results. Long wait to get in with him, but worth it. My best advice is to schedule with him, and also schedule with a PCP or another psychiatrist who can help in the interim.

Best Shrink Ever!
Although I was disappointed that I had to wait 4 months for my initial 60-min intake, I was not surprised due to the recommendations I received about Dr. Mays' excellent bedside manner and skills. Within the first half of my intake and after asking questions that showed his eagerness to understand me, Dr. Mays identified an improperly-prescribed medication that caused me 18+ months of extremely poor sleep. As I followed his directions, my sleep gradually returned, and finally, I experienced well being. I have bipolar 1 disorder, which I know to be difficult to treat. I also know that the right medication is a moving target. Dr. Mays has been completely responsive to me and has expertly guided me through some tough times. Although not emotionally effusive, he shows empathy for me. He wants to see me relieved from my symptoms. I am very impressed by his knowledge of psych meds. I have never been so expertly treated or felt so respected by a physician. I highly recommend him!

Dr Mays and his staff could be better. I’m not sure if his staff even give him my messages. I asked for a refill 5 days before running out and now it has been 11 days. I am now off my meds. I left messages with his staff and only get a return phone call 7 days later after calling into his office and requesting to speak with office manager. His staff state he is ignoring their messages to him regarding me. What to do!! He is a very intelligent physician but if I don’t have my medication it’s not working. I don’t know really where the disconnect is. I think it’s his staff. When I talk with Dr Mays he is always very kind and helpful.

I am a long time patient of Dr. Mays, and was pleased w/him as my physician. HOWEVER- I have been trying through numerous ways to get ahold of him per my PCP- nothing works. I've talked to 2 people in the office, both said everyone was teleworking, 1 explained what # I should receive a return call from- I stated that # had called me, but my phone didn't ring, & left no VM. I then was immediately spammed w/35 blocked calls. Called PAKC back, asked what was going on, gave the 2 numbers I had been called from & found out my msg was received & I would be called back. Was again spammed by the wrong #. Got a call from a private #, who said I would be called when it was my turn. I have been a pt of PAKC long enough to know who I was talking to, & she is never friendly. I doubt I will get my issue resolved & I am sorry to say that this has reflected poorly on my opinion of Dr. Mays. A great Dr ruined by an incompetent staff, & a squirrly contact system. I deserve better than this.

I'm impressed with Dr Mays. Have been seeing him for a couple of years. My only problem is with the website. You'll receive an answer in 48 hours, more like 7-10 days and then I don't actually receive an answer, just the pharmacy saying a script is ready. I know from talking with him he does not want you to run out of meds. I don't know where the disconnect is, but when it is time for a refill start asking a couple of weeks in advance. I do not think he actually receives my messages for several business days. That sucks terribly because I don't feel right when I'm out. There is definitely room for improvement. I have a strong healthcare background, and this isn't acceptable.

It wasn't a patient/doctor relationship. It was just an exchange of paperwork. I would get the prescriptions I'd ask for and he would get to bill my insurance company. Typical psychiatrist. I give you scripts and you give me money. STAY AWAY!

I have worked with numerous psychiatrists over 30 years in 5 major metropolitan areas, all larger than KC. I've been diagnosed with everything from bipolar, mania, depression, etc. Wrong! Dr. Mays is the first who diagnosed my condition exactly right. I am lucky to have had him as my psychiatrist for almost 4 years. I now have peaceful, joyous days & sleep well every night.
