Call the ER ahead. If this MD is on call --- GO TO ANOTHER ER. My son had a horrible stomach virus. His pediatrician sent him to the ER because he was terribly dehydrated. We had been doing everything by the book in terms of giving him fluids, but it was not enough. He had 5 days of terrible vomiting and diarrhea. His blood work and urine sample showed he was seriously dehydrated. His pediatrician who knew him well said he needed the IV. We are experienced parents and do not take kids to er or doctor for little things. All we got from this MD was a patronizing lecture about how to give a kid liquids. They kept telling us that eventually our son would get over the virus. The point was that my son was miserable and an IV would have made him feel better. And, oh, yes, little kids DO die from dehydration. We ended up at Baystate the next day where we were treated so much better. They said he absolutely needed the IV.
