Dr John Pantuosco is a national treasure. I met him following a severe abdominal injury that left me utterly immobilized. I experienced a complete disruption in my hips, legs, and abdomen. I was paralyzed and unable to perform even the most basic daily functions; I could not lift my arms to eat, I could not sit up, and I could barely walk into the building to make the appointment. The pain left me without sleep for weeks, only getting a few moments of respite periodically through the night and day. Dr Pantuosco approached my case with pragmatic professionalism; he was respectful and calming even though I was afraid, hopeless, and in a sleep deprived fugue. I was most impressed with his analytical knowledge to see my situation as a whole; he was able to help piece together my mysterious presentation and start peeling away the layers so my muscles could begin healing and returning to normal function. He performed an SI injection, Illiopsoas injection, and several trigger point injections that I truly feel saved my life. Coincidentally, I have a severe Needle Phobia; Dr. Pantuosco’s skill with a syringe is nothing short of an artistic craft. He was deft, accurate, and injected the cortisone as smoothly as if he were buttering toast. The iiliopsoas injection uses a needle that, to me, looked to be the length of my forearm, and was about to be inserted into a tender groin area. Though my limbic system was utterly petrified and screaming, the cognitive reasoning part of my brain felt utterly safe with him as a provider. It would have been easy for Dr Pantuosco to get swept up in my state of crisis and alarm, or pass me along to another provider; but after several months of meetings, I can honestly say he is one of the most grounded and calm-spoken providers I’ve ever met. He is extremely wise, confident, and takes the time to explain his reasoning without being high-minded, pompous, or condescending. His tone, candor, and ability to show interest in a difficult case is rare. I know that no matter how long it will take me to heal, he will be there helping me limp along patiently. I am 80% recovered, and as a mental health counselor treating mostly children in our community I feel utter regret not being able to work right now. Thanks to Dr Pantuosco, I at least have hope. I have light at the end of the tunnel. Some of my providers expected me to be in a wheelchair by now, and thanks to Dr Pantuosco seeing me holistically, we finally see my symptoms as part of the big picture. It’s taken him a year to help me put the pieces of this puzzle together, but he’s helped me regain more than my mobility and function. He’s helped me maintain the will to live.
