Excellent!!
Dr. Bernard is a polite, professional and knowledgeable physician. He suggested we try the path of 'least resistance' with cortisone injections and physical therapy first for my knees. Wasn't pushy to jump into surgery. Answered all my questions to my satisfaction and didn't seem to mind my asking them at all! I highly recommend him and will leave another review if and when surgery becomes necessary. 5 stars!

He misdiagnosed a frozen shoulder, which happens, but ignored the MRI that said I had rotator cuff tears. Told me it was just frozen shoulder and I should continue PT exercises, which is the opposite of treatment for rotator cuff tears. I finally contacted UVA. They did further testing and scheduled surgery for later this month. If Dr. Barnard had paid attention to anyone other than himself, I would probably be out of surgery and recovering by now. Instead, many more weeks of pain and probably further injury. I tried to tell him I didn't fit the pattern for frozen shoulder and he ignored me. Radiologist said my shoulder had issues other than frozen shoulder and he ignored that. No problem with first diagnosis as symptoms are similar, but total incompetence to continue his diagnosis in the face of an MRI that proved he was wrong.

I came to Dr Bernard in November of 2022 for a blown out shoulder injury from my workplace, he has given me excellent care and still is at the present time. He is the most knowledgeable and caring doctor I’ve ever met, he is super easy to talk to and he listens to your concerns. Awesome individual!!! Keith Blair.

Dr. Barnard is simply the best!
Over six years ago, Dr. Barnard repaired a total rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder. Recently I felt and heard a “pop” in my left shoulder and after a couple of days I knew that I needed to have it checked out. Since Dr. Barnard did my first surgery and because he is simply the best shoulder surgeon in the area, I made an appointment to see him. The news wasn’t good, so I’ll have to have a MRI before a treatment plan can be developed. Even though I may be a little anxious, I know that I am in THE BEST HANDS and I completely trust Dr. Barnard.

Wonderful physician
I have been taking my son to Dr. Barnard for the last year due to sports injuries resulting in 2 surgeries. Dr. Barnard has excellent bedside manner, he listens, addresses all concerns, and cares about the well-being of his patients. I appreciate that Dr. Barnard doesn’t believe in rushing the recovery period for young athletes. We never feel like a number during our appointments. I would recommend Dr. Barnard to anyone.

fantadtic surgeon
I have been seeing Dr. Barnard for at least 20 years. He performed both my knee replacements, and I have never had any trouble. I am currently seeing him for shoulder arthritis. He treats his patients conservatively and does not rush into surgery. When surgery is needed, he does an incredible job with no issues. He cares immensely about his patients. I would recommend him to anyone...you cannot ask for a better surgeon.

I first saw Dr. Barnard at age 16 with frequent knee dislocations. We discussed all of my options, what had and hadnt worked so far, and ultimately agreed on MPFL Reconstruction. He was absolutely phenomenal during my care, especially considering how scared I was. I remember him coming to the room when I woke up and smiling, saying everything went. Within 3-4 months after surgery I was brand new again, and to this day have had absolutely no issues or recurring pain. I highly recommend him for anyone who wants a doctor that is honest, straight forward, and knows what he's doing.

The meniscus arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. Barnard for me was a very failed operation. It has been almost three months since the operation. My joint pain is more painful than before. Every time I see him, he is always in a hurry. He Always leave soon before he has finished answering my questions. No matter what type of treatment I need, he will let me decide for myself. He has never given me advice from a professional doctor. He is very irresponsible.

R/ shoulder pain. Diagnosed as rotator cuff injury. After seeing Dr. Barnard, we decided the need for surgery. Dr. Barnard’s diagnosis & clear explanation of what would take place, assisted me in opting for surgery. He’s experienced and concise. We went over the “if’s, & how it’d take place. His experience & expertise was clearly displayed. Although complications were later found, he skillfully planned and performed a superb reverse shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Barnard is highly professional and caring. His concern for wellness, healing, and therapy before and after surgery, assisted me in the decision to schedule additional surgery for a torn ACL.
