Excellent Surgeon and Patient Provider
When my daughter's eyes started crossing just after her second birthday, we went to three ophthalmologists for consultations. Dr. Marcus was our third and final provider. She respected our desire to wait and see if glasses would help, then performed surgery when they didn't. The surgery was successful, and now my daughter's eyes are perfectly aligned! That was five years ago, and we go back now for regular appointments. My daughter has ADHD and any doctor's appointments can be difficult, but from ages 3-6 she really, really struggled with her appointments with Dr. Marcus-- with her visual processing difficulty and slow processing speed, it seemed like these eye test appointments were poking her in her sore spots. Dr. Marcus was and continues to be wonderfully understanding, patient, and accommodating, and we are incredibly thankful for her surgical skills and ongoing support. I recommend her every chance I get!

Great doctor
When I was looking for ophthalmologist for my 4 years old daughter I put most emphasis on expertise and experience. I feel that top tier medical schools accept the most talented candidates. So when I saw Dr Marcus credentials (Columbia University,NYU,Yale and Duke) I gave it a try. At the time of office visit I was really impressed by the doctor’s knowledge and her ability to explain complex medical conditions in easy to understand terms. Dr.Marcus was very efficient, she did not engaged in small talk, but she patiently answered all my questions. My daughter liked her. I was really surprised by some negative reviews that some parents left online. I guess these folks were upset by diagnosis they heard. Also, in the office waiting room I saw a big boy non stop jumping on a chair like a wild creature, and his mother made not effort to control him, I am not sure these folks will be happy with Dr.Marcus. I will definitely recommend Dr.Marcus to my friend and family.

Would not return
I had a good experience with Dr. Marcus until I didn't. My last appointment it appeared she cared more about her own medical opinion than creating a personalized treatment plan. She is very experienced and is a qualified eye care professional. I saw her yearly for many years as a teenager then as a young adult. I previously saw Dr. Donna Brown. My last visit with Dr. Marcus I was very up front with her about what I wanted and she did not seem to listen and would not grant my request. So I found an ophthalmologist at VCU that listened to my concerns and helped me get what I wanted - referral for contacts. After a few years of wearing contacts, the vision in my amblyopic eye has improved. Dr. Marcus was against me getting contacts which I understood - the VCU ophthalmologist was hesitant as well. However during that last visit she seemed frustrated at me and was not caring. I left that last appointment in tears from the experience and did not return.

Recommend Dr. Marcus
I'm writing in defense of Dr. Marcus. My wife and I have not experienced any of the issues in these negative reviews. Our son is 5 and has been going to Dr. Marcus since he was 18 months old and we have had nothing but positive experiences. She is polite, nice to and patient with our son, and answers all of our questions thoroughly. We definitely recommend Dr. Marcus to other parents of young children dealing with vision problems.

Should not treat children
Her credentials are more impressive than the actual care she provides. She has no business treating children. Awful bedside manner and does not even appear to like children - which makes it very hard to watch her perform an eye exam on a 4 year old. She rushes us out every time with little attention paid to the needs of our son who’s been incredibly compliant with his patching routine. My son has left more insecure every time we leave wondering what he had just done wrong to be talked to the way she does. She should stick to adult patients. We will be leaving this practice because of this last experience. She really needs to get her act together or retire. There is no place in medicine for the lack of empathy that she exudes. Be better.

Not good with peds w/ anxiety
Completely agree with other reviews. She was very condescending (especially for someone younger than myself and to another HCP) and went so far as to call me “desperate” when I inquired about other alternative means of treatment for my daughters condition. If she wasn’t specialized in her area of needs,we would switch. Other than being thorough and a decent diagnostician, she has horrible bedside manners. Telling my daughter (who is anxious) that things are “no big deal” when to her they are, is astounding. She needs a good ten years, a mentor who can coach her on empathy, and maybe some addition classes on interpersonal relationships. Dr. Marcus, if you read these reviews, know that you’re talented, but that does not give you the right to be impatient, condescending, and rude to parents and their young children. You will and are leaving lasting impressions on children with visual challenges and are not making their impairments easier to understand or deal with,Have some compassion

She should not work with children
We saw her for a few years but finally had enough of her condescension and negative disposition. She acts impatient and irritated with our child and others we know that used to go to her. She does not listen, and is annoyed when you ask her questions. Take your kid to someone else that actually likes working with children.

You would think that if someone specializes as a pediatrician then patience would be one of their strengths. Let me tell you that is not the case with this doctor. She is absolutely RUDE, has zero manners and does not answer questions adequately. She walked out on us while we were talking to her half sentence. Needless to say we are never going back. Worst experience with any doctor period.

Honestly, the worst bedside manner I've ever experienced with any Doctor. My son was born with cataracts and he was getting just a standard eye exam. She made him, and myself, feel so uncomfortable. He's only 6 and yes, it's difficult to force a child to keep his eyes open while a flashlight is shining in his pupil. However, in no way does that condone gripping the top of his head and raising your voice. I promised him we'll never see her again. I've begun seeing Dr. Peter Goldmann, highly recommend.

I totally agree that she was very dismissive of questions. When we expressed concern when she told us our 3 year old son’s vision is never going to improve and will continue to deteriorate she told us “there’s lasik”. This was the worst experience that we’ve ever had with a pediatric doctor. And we’ve been to a number of pediatric specialists. Not what I expected from a doctor especially from one specializing with kids.

An overall bad experience. Her explanation left us with many questions which were met disdainful dismissal. We genuinely felt she was insulted that questioned her diagnosis. We walked away with little explanation of what the implications of my child's diagnosis were; what the treatment plan was and why; how treatment or eyesight might change over time. She simply said, 'if you don't give your child glasses you are depriving them the chance of 20/20 vision.'
