I highly recommend Dr. Burton and his team
I would recommend Dr Burton and his staff in a heartbeat. During a 10 years period my back became worse and worse to the point I couldn't walk more than 100 yards without my left leg going numb. Hiking, walking, biking and gardening were no longer parts of my lifestyle which for my entire life were major factors in my happiness. My wife and I contemplated a miserable retirement saga for us after saving enough to retire comfortably and travel. Dr. Burton diagnosed me with severe stenosis and surgery was the only option. Nothing scared me more than having back surgery plus a fusion. It turned out to be a great decision as I was walking two miles with NO numbness or pain in less than 6 weeks. I had my surgery over TWO years ago and I feel AWESOME. I can now do whatever I want just as I did before all this back nonsense. Dr. Burton helped give me back my active life style and I cannot thank him and his staff enough. The communication and care from Dr Burton and his staff are unmatched.

I completely agree with other negative reviews.
I was hospitalized at KU due to severe back pain and having a hard time walking. After going through tons of thorough tests, Dr. Burton finally came to my hospital room late in the day. I had been giving morphine due to the severe pain and was barely able to concentrate. Dr. Burton was very cold, rude and insensitive. He didn't even care that I was in pain and basically said the pain was all in my head and that he was discharging me the next day. I was able to get another appointment with a good orthopedic doctor in the area with two weeks following my horrible experience at KU. Thankfully, the new orthopedic doctor took the time to look at my x-rays, MRI's and other test results. He said it was no wonder I was in severe pain. He also referred me to a pain management doctor who was able to help me with spinal injections. I would never in a million years ever recommend that anyone go to see Dr. Burton. He is one of the worst human beings I have ever had the misfortune of meeting.

Saved my Life - I AM A REAL PATIENT
I came into the KU Med Center when I lost all sensation and use of my legs in an instance. An MRI was done and I was found to have an infection in my spine which went into my spinal cord. He came in on a Saturday to remove all previous hardware and debrided the infection. He continued to keep a close eye on me until I left to go to an inpatient rehab facility. I would have him be my surgeon as he as performed all my past surgeries. Thank you Dr. Burton for being such a great person and surgeon.

Awesome surgeon and Doctor!
My wife and I could not be more pleased with Dr. Burton's pre-surgery, surgery, and post-surgery services! If we could give more stars, we certainly would. She had surgery a month ago, and to date, we have had at least six encounters and conversations with him. On each occasion, he took time to educate and inform us, invite our questions, and before leaving he would ask if we had any other questions. We have rarely had the benefit of this type of back and forth conversation with one of our doctors. This surgery was a second back surgery (first surgery by another doctor) for my wife in a 20 month period. We had some understandable trepidation about doing a second surgery, but once we met Dr. Burton, and once he explained his surgical plan, we were almost immediately at ease. He exudes a confidence in his abilities, but it is a humble and sober confidence. We are grateful that he approaches these complicated and difficult surgeries with such confidence. Thank you, Dr. Burton.

Lumbar Fusion went great!
I consulted with Dr. Burton for a number of years with lower back pain. I wasn't really excited to have surgery. We decide that he'd monitor it for a while so I went once a year to him to track its deterioration. Finally it got to a point I knew I had to have the surgery & he agreed that he could help me. Bottomline he fused L4-5 & did a laminectomy on L3-4. It was an outstanding success and I cannot say enough about how pain-free my back has been since his surgery on it over two years ago. I highly recommend Dr Burton.

I work in the health field-many specialists fall short in bedside manners. I do not expect a warm cozy feeling or a lot of unnecessary chit chat. I have a lot of pain on my left side-back-hip-running down my leg in to my foot. I have done injections, physical therapy, massages, chiropractic adjustments, nerve stimulation, etc with no relief. An MRI was sent to him prior to my appt & x-rays. He ordered a full body x-ray-before seeing me-the results of it were added to my file a week later by his radiology department. He quickly looked at MRI & determined that I had a mild disk void at L4-L5 -considered it an elective surgery and lectured to lose 50 pounds first. He basically told me to just eat less. My husband ask a question & he gave him a long hard stare-as if he wanted to hurt him. I feel that he most definitely discriminates against heavy people and shows no empathy or concern for individual health issues. I feel he is a disgrace-condescending-arrogant! I wouldn't let him touch me!

Dr. Burton was the 3rd doctor we'd been to for my husbands back injury. He was very thorough, and didn't push anything on us. We went into the first appointment knowing surgery may be a viable option. After discussing options with Dr. Burton, we decided to proceed with the multiple level spinal fusion. Dr. Burton did an amazing job and we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. After a year in pain, my husband is back to his normal lifestyle thanks to Dr. Burton. Each checkup appointment was a great experience. He made sure we understood everything, and always made sure our questions were answered. We would definitely recommend him!

Backstory, I actually had a driver take me to his office at KU but due to unforeseen problems I was late. They refused to see me after we had driven 4 hours there. I found out then that they have outreach visits in towns much closer to me that I was never informed of. My 2nd visit was in Hutchinson. There was added paperwork given with questions about my body image and depression. Dr Burton told the staff to do an x-ray on me. However, it was never done. His PA spoke so quickly I had trouble understanding what he was saying. My MRI couldn't be read on the monitor in the room so he took me out in the hallway to look at it... He never read the radiologist report and looked at 6 pics total on my MRI. He said it looked like a perfectly normal spine. Since Ive had 3 surgeries that concerned me. He took his dictation right in front of me then asked if I had any other questions. I asked other questions and was told to go walk in a pool and I would heal. Waste of time and money.

DR BURTON IS THE WORST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY 52 years!!!! Just like everyone says super condescending, looks at you like you’re an idiot if you ask something, I worked for a doctor for 20 years even if he was in a bad mood he wouldn’t treat a patient like this ever, and I’m going to come right out and say it he is a complete a&&h@!e!!!! The THING talked on his microphone the whole time saying the wrong thing, I was Itrying to correct him (it was about me after all)but he didn’t listen to me he showed me my MRI showed me curvature of the spine with arthritis in it and said go have therapy, He knows I’m disabled I’ve had seven surgeries on my left foot and ankle so that’s not possible I can’t get out of bed without him crawling all the way to the bathroom! Oh and surprise surprise I don’t have use my Hubby’s private insurance anymore because of $! I have Medicare you all were 100% correct a horrible horrible bedside manner and a horrible doctor or person in general!

Dr. Burton did a scoliosis surgery on me at my age of 54, 9 years ago. This involved 2 surgeries.... one from the back and 6 weeks later, another from the front. My surgery has been a complete success. I found Dr. Burton to be extremely caring and compassionate. Having seen my success, a friend recommended Dr. Burton to a man paralyzed by surgery and he walked after Dr. Burton performed a second surgery. His bedside manner is straitforward, direct and non sugar coated but honest.

Never met Dr. Burton although I have been scheduled to see him for several months. Even with stage 4 cancer and physicians/referrals have requested I be seen earlier, yet to no avail. So I have sat for SEVERAL months dealing with my issues not knowing if I would still be around for the appmnt. I get a call today suddenly (2/24/17) canceling my appointment yet the original appointment was not until April...which was made before the end of the year (2016). Hippocratic Oath--Doc?

Dr. Burton is the best spine surgeon in KC. He did a 13 hour surgery to correct a previous surgery. Prior to seeing Dr. Burton, I couldn't stand straight and had so much pain that walking was so hard. He fixed everything. It took months of getting in to see him, but it was so worth it!

Avoid at all costs. Dr. Burton is condescending, cruel and incompetent. He flat out disagrees with findings confirmed by his own radiology department and becomes very authoritative if challenged. He feels free to make sweeping judgements that are way out of his expertise, with no concern for the care you came looking for. He runs his office like are a number, spends little time listening, and lectures with no regard to your individual health issue. For him it is a "numbers game" as he says.

Absolutely zero bedside manner and though this isn't a deal breaker, the condescension, meanness and lying solidified my feelings of never stepping foot in this surgeons office ever again. Apparently it isn't cool to do your homework and ask questions. I encourage anyone thinking of going to him to do so with trepidation.

Dr Burton knows what he is doing. Hands down if your problem can and should be fixed he is the one to see. May not come across he cares does not sugar coat straight forward if surgery will help condition but if will/may not he will let you know upfront said to many people want surgery which won't help that get upset when he will not operate. Only has clinic 1day a week surgery rest of week. I have back problems more than 10 years saw him laid it out for me had 7 hour surgery wish I had sooner.
