Arrogant
Shires performed not 1 but 2 unsuccessful and UNNECESSARY surgeries on my husband. She failed to let us know that pathology found cancer from his first biopsy after taking a second look and put this information in his medical record as an addendum so we would not see it. After telling my husband he had ‘non aggressive squamous cell carcinoma’ (which is completely laughable as SCC is, by nature, extremely aggressive) said it was “no big deal” and he’d get some radiation and it would be fine. That very same day appointment we met with the radiologist oncologist who didn’t want to touch my husband with a 10 ft pole. These doctors were clearly not on the same page whatsoever. By the grace of God we got a second opinion where we were referred to Vanderbilt where my husband FINALLY received the care he needed and deserved. Radical surgery that took his eye and part of his nose, a craniotomy, and tissue grafts followed by chemo and radiation with lifelong debt is a VERY big deal, Shires.

Exceptional Surgeon
I needed her for 2 occasions. In 2019 she performed a biopsy on a lump on my upper palate. She has such a friendly bed side manner. The lump was benign in 2019. In 2024, it unexpectedly grew very large and needed to be removed. It boggled my mind how she was going to remove such a large territory without my losing all of my gum. But she cleaned it out to the root and my palate is so clean. Again, she was very easy and friendly to talk to and get all questions answered. An skillful surgeon with a sweet demeaner.

Dr. Shires saved my mom’s life. She is reassuring, kind, and humble. She visited my mom often during her 18-day ICU pot-surgery stay, never let us get distracted by setbacks, visited mom on Sunday’s, on Mother’s Day, and held her hand often. At mom’s final followup visit, even with Covid regulations, Dr. Shires hugged my mom, held her hand, and spent a long leisurely visit with us. Mom is cancer-free! Dr. Shires’s skill as a surgeon is legendary in our Memphis area. If you are blessed or lucky enough to get to be her patient, then grab it!

I came in due to thyroid nodules and chest pain. This was the WORST doctor's visit I have ever had. She literally spent less than 5 min. with me. Never touched or examined my neck. Never ran any blood work or any other tests. Sat across from me and said the lump was large and thyroid needed to be removed. Didn't run any tests, didn't take any blood, weight- nothing. When I advised of the pressure in my chest, she did not address it but made sure to send me a bill for the "service". Her bedside manner is not the best. She seems nice but had what appeared to be a nervous giggle and it made me feel as though I would not be comfortable with coming back as my condition is serious to me.

Office visit was exceptional. Laryngoscopy was quick and gentle compared tho the last several I had experienced before being referred to Dr Shires. Surgery went well and recovery was quick. Very impressed. I certainly recommend her.

I am very disappointed in this doctor. She was a very awesome doctor in 2014. She went above and beyond when my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer.Recently he has been having trouble and went to her and she was interested until his insurance was canceled. He has been in terrible pain and cannot get any relief. Then one of her nurses follows him out after his appointment to flirt with him as she admits she's not supposed to. NO RELIEF AND WE ARE IN ER NO THANKS TO HER OR DARLA!!!!!!

I wanted to finish my story about my awful experience with Dr. Shires and West Clinic. She scheduled a surgery for me without EVER seeing me. Only saw a U T student resident. The hospital called me to confirm and I said I didn't know I was having surgery. I feel that I was being used as a teaching tool. Very unprofessional!!
