Didn’t fix anything!
After the second time I dislocated my shoulder I was referred to Huffard. He dismissed me without any imaging, telling me I needed more PT (which I’d been doing for ages). After the third dislocation in less than 6 months, his PA finally ordered me an MRI, showing a torn labrum. Huffard repaired my shoulder in late 2022. After just a year, my shoulder had grown loose again, and has dislocated twice since my surgery. I learned that I have a humeral head deformity as a result of frequent dislocation. It’s very common and can be seen in x-rays, yet somehow it was never brought up until I saw a different doctor. Dr. Huffard did not identify or account for this problem, which has led me to need another surgery less than 3 years after the first. I am basically back to square one.

Top notch physician
There are plenty of technically, excellent physicians and Ben is certainly one of them. He has top-tier training, and years of surgical experience. However, there are far fewer doctors who have such a wonderful bedside manner. Ben is terrific and I highly recommend him to anyone. Definitely one of the best.

Shoulder surgery
From the initial diagnosis, to physical therapy and other options, and then to actual surgery, Dr. Huffard was transparent and communicated options and potential results. I would 100% recommend him for any orthopedic needs.

Thank you Dr. Huffard! And Ali Chabot!
I highly recommend Dr. Ben Huffard! I am incredibly grateful for the job he did on my meniscus. What stood out with Dr Huffard is that he was confident reading my MRI and put zero pressure on me to have arthroscopic surgery on my knee. His bedside manner was kind, caring and empathetic through the entire process: intake appointment, day of surgery, post-op appointment. His assistant Ali is equally knowledgeable as she has been with him for many years and gave me an easy to understand explanation at my post-op. I am soooo glad I finally had this procedure done. And even more happy with the professional team I chose to do it: Dr Huffard and Ali Chabot are the way to go!!!

Excellent Doctor
Dr Huffard has performed two surgeries on my left shoulder. One was three years ago from a sports injury. He repaired my labrum and torn bicep. The other was two months ago after a car wreck. Both times my shoulder returned to 100%. Dr Huffard is a great communicator and spends the extra time answering all of my questions. I definitely recommend him

Poor surgical shoulder repair
I had a shoulder labrum repair in 2021 with Dr. Huffard. I had a torn labrum with a healthy biceps tendon on initial imaging. Weeks after surgery when progress was expected, I was experiencing more pain than before surgery. Dr. Huffard was dismissive of my pain, diagnosing me with frozen shoulder (without evaluating my range of motion), which could take years to heal with uncertain outcomes. I sought out a second opinion, and repeated an MRI which showed the biceps tendon (white and healthy appearing on initial imaging) had been rubbing by one of the labral repair anchors that was too closely placed to the tendon, and was red, inflamed, and irritated. The recommended repair was a second surgery, where we cut the biceps tendon. I had this done with the second surgeon six months after surgery with Dr. Huffard. I was far more comfortable and functionable post operatively, and am more functional three years out from surgery.

Dr. Huffard performed reattachment of my badly torn gluteus medius tendon four days ago. He is only one of two highly recommended surgeons in Maine that I could find. This is an uncommon surgery. Recovery is not easy and he told me to plan on a full year before returning to golf, bowling, hiking, etc. He fully and patiently explained the procedure and expected outcome. I am very pleased with his approach and skills. His entire team is top notch. I feel like he and I made a good decision.

Had rotator cuff repair surgery in October. I've been very satisfied with my experience with Dr. Huffard. He clearly explained what was wrong and what he would try to do. He was also very candid regarding the factors that could impact a successful outcome. Surgery went well with no surprises. Rehab has been going smoothly.

Wish I'd read this page before consulting him, although I only had the one office visit. Agreed, extremely poor manner. Unconcerned to the point of being injurious. "Well, *this* can't be fixed," Something to the effect of "Well you're OLD" (not even normal retirement age, yet). Zero talk of pain remediation in torn bicep, the part of the injury that hurts the most, except that "biceps aren't much use anyway so if it really bothers me I could cut it in half." Hello? No suggestion of trying cortisone/lidocain injections first? The torn/attenuated bicep is only the most painful of a number of problems including broken clavicle that I agree is probably permanent. But I think I made it clear that regaining functionality is important to me (one MUST shovel snow), and he made it clear he didn't want to do anything at all. Not even string me along to bilk me of my money.

HAD a terrible procedure that did not fix my hip. He was very dismissive about my pain and more concerned about my pain meds. I went to another hip specialist and had a total hip replacement and my pain is gone along with my pain meds. My friend had the same outcome stay away

Poor bedside manner. Shows no concern about the patient's worries and health concerns, where he is bent on discharging his patient wether healed or not.

Dr. Huffard is a very honest and knowledgeable surgeon. He was able to diagnose my shoulder very quickly. After his repair I followed his direction and was able to gain full range of motion in my shoulder after p.t. I really appreciate how kind Dr. Huffard was towards me and my family.

After a couple of years bouncing between a few different specialists, I saw Dr. Huffard for my first hip procedure. He took me seriously and was finally able to diagnose the issue with my right hip. I have seen him again for the same issue in the left hip and could not have asked for a better surgeon. I must say though while he is great, I hope to never see him again as he has fixed both sides!

He has a poor bedside manner. Doesn't seem to actually listen to his patients. I felt initially like I was being blown off. Then he found out that I actually had a tear in my labrum (he thought it was simply an IT Band issue), and began to treat me better. After surgery, I didn't see him for 9 weeks, and when I had the follow up he was unsure of what the protocol actually was by was demeaning. My hip is fixed. So he doesn't have a 1.
