Dr. Bonner is an Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgery specialist in Fremont, CA. I love what I get to do with and for my patients. Fortunately, joint replacement is a generally reliable procedure, so we focus our attention first on whether surgery is the best option, and second, getting the procedure done in the least invasive way possible, to allow the most rapid recovery. Still, the thought of an elective surgery can produce anxiety. We acknowledge patient fears and address them directly, by providing information, connection with patients who have gone through the same procedure, and if desired, intercessory prayer. We spend a great deal of time aligning patient expectations with the reality of what these procedures can deliver, based on our current outcomes and research. Some of our patients have had replacements elsewhere that have not worked well. We specialize in analyzing the reasons why and developing a corrective plan.

Dr. Costouros has spent his entire career in orthopaedic surgery devoted to the comprehensive treatment of shoulder disorders. He was named Chief of Shoulder Surgery for the Institute for Joint Restoration and Research after a decade at Stanford University as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Prior to Stanford, Dr. Costouros was regional chief of shoulder surgery for Kaiser-Permanente Northern California. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He has a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Costouros graduated with honors from Stanford University, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) for medical school and residency, and completed shoulder fellowships at Harvard Medical School and the University of Zurich, Switzerland with JP Warner and Christian Gerber, two of the world's most prominent experts in the field. Dr. Costouros is past president of the UCSF Leroy C. Abbott Orthopaedic Society, the Northern California Orthopaedic Society, and the Northern California Chapter of the Western Orthopaedic Association. He is also an active member of the society of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (SECEC), ISAKOS, and the Western Orthopaedic Association (WOA). His research is focused on clinical outcomes following traditional and reverse shoulder joint replacement, stemless shoulder arthroplasty, novel arthroscopic techniques, and the use of augmented and virtual reality and robotics to enhance surgical precision and improve outcomes in shoulder surgery. Finally, he has been involved in multiple FDA clinical trials and the design of several FDA-approved shoulder joint replacement devices including most recently the first stemless reverse total shoulder replacement available in the USA.
