Biography: Stemming from an educational foundation that included four years at parochial colleges, four years at Big Ten and state universities, and four years at a professional school where I earned my doctorate in clinical psychology, I went on to gain administrative, but primarily clinical experience in a range of settings that included a State hospital, County jail, nursing homes, a private psychiatric hospital, and several private practices. In addition, I have managed contracts and provided services through Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). My counseling approach is framed in client-centered, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, psychodynamic, solution focused, existential, and faith based orientations. In my early years, I was a generalist working with all ages and families. Currently, my preference is working with individuals in their late teens and older. I view counseling as basically a process to learn more about oneself and/or relationship(s), and to make changes in those areas of life where one has control and/or responsibility. My role is that of teacher, analyst, and facilitator to help you reach your goals. I am sensitive to the challenges and obstacles that arise in examining one's thoughts, mood, and behaviors in the course of self-learning, personal/relationship growth, and change. From my breath of experience, I offer a range of perspective and skill building techniques through a flexible and culturally sensitive approach.

Care Philosophy: Talkspace partners with care providers who find satisfaction in providing therapy in a way that prioritizes the client's convenience and preferences. Because all therapy takes place virtually, through messaging, live virtual sessions, or both, providers can communicate more frequently and casually in comparison to traditional face-to-face therapy. Talkspace treatment methods are supported by scientific research and are committed to non-judgmental care that is inclusive and respectful of cultural and other identities. Talkspace patients are matched with the best provider for them based on their needs and availability during the registration process. Once matched with a provider, patients may change at any time, and may contact support to request a specific provider. *The above is attributed to Talkspace and not the provider.*

I work through a trauma-informed lens, with a strengths-based, humanistic perspective. Those who have benefitted most from my work have experienced some trauma in their lives and are working to unravel the effects those events have had on them. I have a long history of working with those who have experienced significant domestic violence, grief and loss, and with loved ones of folks who are LGBTQIAA+. Additionally, those with PTSD, other anxiety disorders, and Bipolar have greatly benefited from their work with me. I also work with those who are challenged with addiction issues, especially if they are in tandem with other mental health issues. Together we can unravel the interconnectedness of the challenges you experience and I can support you in finding a life that is more meaningful and satisfying. My goal in my work with you is to develop a connection through which you can learn to develop trust, insight and a deeper understanding of yourself. This means at times I will work with your innate intelligence to identify and create solutions and at other times I may use what you have shared with me and my own intuition to offer advice, share observations and make suggestions. I have an eclectic toolkit that includes working with Narrative therapy, using aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. You have taken the first step on your road to healing, the first step is often the most difficult. Thanks for considering me as your therapist. I look forward to our work together.

How can patients effectively advocate for themselves during appointments with Counselors in Independence, OR?
It is important to remember that you are a partner with your Counselor as you find the right treatment plan for you. You have a voice in your healthcare decisions, and it is important to communicate your goals and preferences clearly to get the highest quality of care.
Ways to advocate for yourself during appointments include: preparing questions in advance to ask your doctor, bringing someone with you to listen and take notes, asking your Counselor to clarify when you do not understand something, and being honest when you have concerns.
If you are unsure about a recommended treatment, tell your doctor you want to seek a second opinion. A quality Counselor will not take offense at this; rather, a good doctor wants to get as much information as possible to make the right treatment choice. If your Counselor does question your interest in a second opinion, it may be a sign that another Counselor may be a better fit for you.
