Care Philosophy: Research proves that patient outcomes are better when the patient is involved with their care, which is why I strive to engage with my patients and respect their preferences. I want to ensure they understand the disease, their diagnosis, treatment options (including clinical trials), and the goals of their treatment. I tailor treatments based on disease state and biology and coordinate patient care with other physicians and medical personnel (like social workers and genetic counselors) so the patient has seamless care.

Care Philosophy: I believe that the role of physicians is to educate patients and to help them make the best decisions possible regarding their own care. The idea that physicians know best and should dictate treatment to patients is archaic. Instead, physicians serve as teachers by educating patients about their diseases and their treatment options and helping patients select the best treatment for their situation. I focus my clinical practice on patients with cancers of the blood (lymphomas, leukemias, and myeloma). I emphasize to patients the importance of participating in clinical trials whenever possible both to ensure that they are receiving the most up-to-date, cutting-edge treatments for their diseases and to help advance the field of oncology. ??

Care Philosophy: My focus is to always treat the patient not just the disease. I've told people many times that I value quality of life as highly as the quantity of life. Therefore, I use every resource at my disposal to address the problems. When treating neuroendocrine cancer, it is absolutely imperative to approach it with a multi-disciplinary approach because it crosses into so many different medical subspecialties. When we are successful, these people can live good, healthy lives. I find that giving the patient time and respect are critical to developing a sense of trust, because it is a team effort with the patient in the center. Our goal at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center is to build a home for neuroendocrine patients, where they can feel comfortable that everyone has experience in this rare disease and all their questions can be answered. By having the most advanced expertise, imaging techniques, clinical trials, and treatments available all in one center, we can provide patients with the best hope for a healthy life.

Care Philosophy: To put oneself in the place of a cancer patient and his or her family is more than a matter of empathy. For me, it forms my philosophy of cancer care. With every patient, I ask myself the simple question, How would I treat my wife, mom, dad, or anyone else I care deeply for? As a cancer specialist, there is no greater honor, no greater vote of confidence, than to have a patient who is at their most frightened and most vulnerable state put his or her trust in me to care for them. It represents an opportunity to do the best work and to make the best effort. As your cancer doctor, I take a pledge that I will take the time to listen to you, answer your questions, keep you informed about your care every step along the way, and provide you with state-of-the-art treatments, promising the greatest likelihood of a successful outcome. I strongly believe there is always hope and once you choose hope, anything is possible. ?
