Biography: Dr. Bernstein's clinical and research interests focus on systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), as well as on the detection and treatment of interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension in patients with autoimmune diseases. She is the Florence Irving Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and an Associate Attending at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Bernstein is the founder and Director of the Columbia University/NewYork-Presbyterian Scleroderma Center. Dr. Bernstein graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College, and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society while a medical student at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She was the recipient of the American College of Rheumatology Distinguished Fellow Award and the Charles L. Christian Award for Excellence in Musculoskeletal Research while a rheumatology fellow at Hospital for Special Surgery. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to systemic sclerosis research, Dr. Bernstein received the Edith Busch Prize for Young Investigators at the 8th Systemic Sclerosis World Congress. Dr. Bernstein has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Arthritis Foundation, and Rheumatology Research Foundation to study lung disease in scleroderma. Her ongoing research projects focus on interstitial lung disease in scleroderma and on lung transplantation in patients with autoimmune diseases.

Biography: Benjamin Izar, MD, PhD is an assistant professor of medicine at the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in the division of Hematology/Oncology and a member of the Tumor Biology and Microenvironment Program at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Izar's clinical practice focuses on melanoma and cancer immunotherapy. In his lab, Dr. Izar studies interactions between cancer cells and cells of the tumor-microenvironment, and how these define metastatic niches, response and resistance to cancer immunotherapies. His lab develops and uses cutting-edge single-cell genomics and genome-editing tools to study patient tumors and models at unprecedented resolution Dr. Izar received his MD/PhD at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, where he was graduated summa cum laude. He completed his internal medicine residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and medical oncology training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, followed by his first faculty position at Danna-Farber Cancer Institute. He completed post-doctoral research training in cancer immunology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. In addition to several awards he received during his training, Dr. Izar is the recipient of multiple national awards, including a NIH/NCI K08 Award (2017) and the prestigious Burroughs Welcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists (2018), and he was selected as a NextGen Star of the American Association for Cancer Research (2019). In 2020, he was selected as a Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Scholar and a Velocity Fellow by Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Izar is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, and the Society for Melanoma Research.

Biography: Michael Brener, MD, MS, is an interventional cardiologist with over five years of experience treating patients with a variety of cardiovascular conditions, specifically coronary artery disease, heart failure, and heart valve abnormalities. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology. Dr. Brener serves as a full-time faculty member of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University School of Medicine. Dr. Brener completed his medical degree and training in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Before starting his training in cardiology, Dr. Brener was an Assistant Chief of Service (Chief Resident) at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then completed his cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, and structural interventional cardiology fellowships at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Brener's clinical practice focuses on cardiac catheterization, percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease with stents and angioplasty, and procedures to treat heart valve conditions like transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. In addition, Dr. Brener is an active researcher with a faculty appointment at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation. His work focuses on cardiovascular hemodynamics in patients with heart failure and valvular heart disease.

Biography: Sonal Pruthi, MBBS, is a vascular medicine and interventional cardiologist, board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, interventional cardiology, echocardiography, and nuclear medicine. She specializes in minimally invasive vascular procedures for arterial and venous diseases, including pulmonary embolism.Dr. Pruthi's training includes being the Valedictorian at University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, and completing residency at SUNY Upstate New York. She completed her fellowship at the University of Connecticut/Hartford Hospital, followed by pursuing Interventional Cardiology training at NYU Langone Medical Center. She also received subspecialty training in Endovascular Intervention and Vascular Medicine at Columbia.Dr. Pruthi is a full-time faculty member, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, NY.

Biography: James H. Garvin, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist who specializes in the care of children and adolescents with brain tumors. He is Principal Investigator at CUMC for the Head Start Program of radiation-sparing intensive chemotherapy for infants and young children with brain tumors. He was principal investigator for a Children's Oncolgy Group protocol for childhood ependymoma. He also offers novel therapies for recurrent brain tumors through our program's membership in Developmental Therapeutics Program of the COG. In addition, Dr. Garvin started the pediatric bone marrow transplant program, and continues as a member of the BMT group. He has particular interest in autologous transplant for brain tumors and allogeneic transplant for metabolic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes, as well as supportive care for BMT patients. Dr. Garvin became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology through research during medical school in the laboratory of a pediatric hematologist. He is a member of numerous professional societies in the field.

Biography: Dr. Henick is a medical oncologist specializing in the care of patients with malignancies of the aerodigestive tract.As the Associate Director of Experimental Therapeutics and Director of Translational Research in Aerodigestive Cancers in Medical Oncology, Dr. Henick's clinical care and research are aligned to improve the effectiveness of, and limit toxicity from, emerging cancer treatments. These effortsentail clinical trials that Dr. Henick has written and leads to study novel therapeutic approaches and to reduce steroid dependence among patients experiencing adverse events fromimmunotherapy.

Biography: Yael R. Nobel, MD, MS is a transplant hepatologist and physician-scientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She earned her BA in Chemistry with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy from Princeton University prior to attending medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she also served as a Chief Resident. She then completed her fellowship in Gastroenterology at NYP Columbia and her advanced training in Transplant Hepatology at NYP Columbia/Cornell. Dr. Nobel's clinical practice is focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with liver disease, including autoimmune liver diseases, viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease, and liver cancer. As a transplant hepatologist, she has expertise in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Nobel completed additional research training through an NIH T32 research fellowship at NYP Columbia and a Masters of Science (MS) in Biostatistics in the Patient-Oriented Research track from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Her research focuses on connections between intestinal bacteria and liver inflammation. Dr. Nobel's work to date has been supported by grants from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American College of Gastroenterology.

Biography: Dr. Meaghan Phipps earned her BS in Behavioral Neuroscience at Lehigh University prior to attending medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center where she also served as a chief resident. She then completed her Gastroenterology fellowship at NYP Columbia and advanced fellowship training in Transplant Hepatology at NYP Columbia/Cornell. Dr. Phipps's clinical practice is focused on the care and management of patients with liver disease, including viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and alcohol-associated liver disease. As a transplant hepatologist, she specializes in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Phipps has a particular interest in the care for patients with liver cancer and works alongside her colleagues in surgery, oncology, and interventional radiology in Columbia's multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Program. In addition to clinical medicine, Dr. Phipps has an interest in medical education and serves as the Associate Program Director for the NYP Columbia/Cornell Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program.

Biography: Neil Vasan, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist in the Department of Medicine and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The Vasan Lab uses functional genomics to understand how oncoproteins regulate breast cancer cell signaling, growth, and therapeutic response. Dr. Vasan received his AB/AM from Harvard University and MD/PhD from Yale University School of Medicine, and completed clinical training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. As a postdoctoral fellow, he identified doublePIK3CAmutations as an oncogenic alteration, which has gone from bench to bedside as a cancer genomic biomarker. His research awards include the NIH K08, Susan G. Komen Career Catalyst Research grant, American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) NextGen Star, andAmerican Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI)Young Physician-Scientist Award.Dr. Vasan is an active clinical oncologist treating patients with breast cancerand serves as a standing member of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) for the FDA.
