Biography: Dr. David DeBoer is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery. He co-founded Southern Joint Replacement Institute in 1999 along with Michael Christie, MD. Their goal was to create a practice that combined quality patient care with state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge research. Dr. DeBoer's medical education started and finished at Vanderbilt University, where he earned a medical doctorate and a master's degree in biomedical engineering. After finishing his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center, Dr. DeBoer also completed a fellowship under Dr. Michael Christie at Vanderbilt. Dr. DeBoer is the Joint Replacement Research Program Director for Sarah Cannon Research Institute. After a two-year hiatus, one spent in Iowa researching the genetics of kidney disease and another in Nepal working at a rural health clinic, Matthew traveled up to the University of Virginia for medical school, graduating in 2015 with his Doctor of Medicine. He matched in orthopaedic surgery residency close at home at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he eventually met his wife, Courtney. After a year in fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City honing his hip and knee replacement practice under some of the country's experts, Matthew moved back to Nashville to join SJRI. Dr. Christie specializes in hip and knee arthroplasty, with a particular interest in complex primary and revision reconstructive surgery. He is active in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee surgeons, for which he evaluates the fields latest research as a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty. He is an avid traveler and deeply involved in the mission of the Walk Strong Foundation, establishing hip and knee replacement centers in low and middle-income countries, as well as the educational goals of the Southern Joint Replacement Institute adult reconstruction fellowship. He enjoys spending time outside with his wife hiking, camping and fishing, and is excited to be back in his home town improving the lives of his neighbors.

Care Philosophy: I believe it is necessary to spend time with my patients talking about their lifestyle and associating that with their complaints. This allows me to determine if lifestyle modifications are necessary to help with their orthopaedic problems. Often, with Modifications, Physical Therapy, Anti-inflammatory Medication and Exercise, we can avoid surgery. When surgery is necessary, using procedures like arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques, my patients get back to work and life more quickly.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Debelak has a passion for sports medicine and the health of athletes. He has treated athletes and worked with the sports medicine teams of Central Michigan University, Michigan State, Valdosta State, and Columbus State University. He also treated professional hockey players and provided team coverage for high school athletes in Georgia, Michigan, and North Carolina. Dr. Debelak will work in our Tennessee clinics and devote his practice to sports injuries and the care of athletes.
