He is Board-certified in family medicine and his background also includes work in occupational medicine and emergency medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He served as a major in the US Air Force, where he was co-director of the family practice residency program at Scott Air Force Base.
