Biography: Benjamin Reed, M.D. is a board-certified general surgeon at Baptist Health. He specializes in abdominal wall reconstruction, including revisional hernias and enterocutaneous fistulae, and foregut disease, including reflux treatment and revisional foregut surgery.Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Reed was a general surgeon and minimally invasive surgery fellow at Prisma Health Upstate in Greenville, S.C.After earning his undergraduate degree at Duke University, Dr. Reed served six years in the U.S. Army as a medic and received numerous awards. Upon completion of his military service, he spent two years working as a paramedic. He went on to earn his medical degree at Case Western University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he remained to complete a general surgery internship at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. He completed a general surgery residency at West Virginia University and a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Prisma Health in Greenville, S.C. During his fellowship, he worked with multiple national leaders in the fields of abdominal wall reconstruction and foregut disease.Dr. Reed is active in several national surgical organizations, including the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Special Operations Medicine, a peer-reviewed journal that covers military and trauma medicine. He is also a published author in the areas of trauma surgery, bariatric surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He enjoys teaching and has served as an instructor at the Medical University of South Carolina Greenville and the Division for Military and Austere Medicine and Surgery at West Virginia University.Dr. Reed spends time with his patients so he can understand their goals and recommend the safest and most effective intervention. He finds that patient involvement in goals of care decision-making enhances patient satisfaction and results in the best outcomes.During his free time, Dr. Reed enjoys hiking, reading Shakespeare, and playing retro video games.
