He completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in internal medicine and conducted his fellowship in both hematology and oncology at the Hospital of the University of Chicago. He was involved in both clinical and laboratory research, where his focus was in the development of new chemotherapy agents to treat a variety of cancers.
