Biography: Januario E. Castro, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist who specializes in treating a variety of blood cancers, including lymphoma and leukemia. His areas of expertise include translational research and early therapy development applied to leukemia and lymphoma with emphasis in cellular-stem cell therapy and gene immunotherapy. As a professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Castro instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on gene immunotherapy applied to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and non Hodgkin-lymphoma (NHL). Dr. Castro completed a fellowship in hematology-oncology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and a residency in internal medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Industrial University of Santander in Columbia. He is board-certified in medical oncology. Dr. Castro is an active member of several academic and biotechnology organizations, including the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Scientific Review Committee, the NCI’s Leukemia Steering Committee, and advisory boards of different biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Care Philosophy: Dr. Patel aims to educate his patients regarding their diagnosis and guide them in making a treatment decision after carefully reviewing the risks and benefits of each option. He has special expertise in the management of prostate and skin cancers, and is able to provide individualized treatment approaches within a context of evidence-based medicine. For prostate cancer, Dr. Patel offers external radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and high-dose-rate brachytherapy all in combination with hydrogel placement in order to reduce rectal toxicity. For skin cancer, Dr. Patel offers external radiation therapy as well as custom skin mold high-dose-rate brachytherapy which can significantly shorten treatments and reduce dose to surrounding tissues.
