Biography: Dr. Kjersti Aagaard, M.D. Ph.D. MSCI is thrilled to serve as the Medical Director of HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division, and the lead clinician at Texas Maternal Fetal Medicine, a practice of HCA Houston Healthcare. Continuing her long and distinguished career as a physician scientist, she is delighted to be leading HCA perinatal research at a national level with the HCA Women's Research Advisory Board and HCA Healthcare Research Institute. She is honored to continue her research and mentorship roles through her ongoing academic appointments with Boston Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School and the Oregon National Primate Research Center. Prior to joining HCA Houston Healthcare, Dr. Aagaard served as the Henry & Emma Meyer Endowered Chair and Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Vice Chair of Research at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, where she practiced Maternal Fetal Medicine and was a valued physician, scientist, educator and leader for two decades.Dr. Aagaard earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Mills College, her Ph.D. in Immunology from Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and her M.D. from the University of Minnesota, where she also completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Aagaard completed her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Utah, where she concomitantly earned a Masters in Clinical Investigation.Dr. Aagaard is a renowned clinician, specializing in preterm birth and congenital anomalies, and pregnancies complicated by diabetes, hypertension and infectious diseases. Dr. Aagaard's impact has been nationally recognized with receipt of numerous awards over the years, including the Michael E. Debakey Excellence in Research Award (2015), the Nature Award for Outstanding Scientific Mentorship (2019), election to the American Society of Clinical Investigators (2019) the SRI President's Achievement Award (2020), and the Society of Toxicology Translational Research Impact Award (2023). Dr. Aagaard is a frequent visiting professor and key note speaker at many institutions and national and international meetings, and in 2017 she gave an invited presentation for the Nobel Symposium on Unexpected Beginnings in the Development of Our Microbiome' at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Dr. Aagaard is a dedicated and awarded educator, teaching continuously since 2007 in the schools of medicine and biomedical graduate sciences and served as the co-Director of the Baylor College of Medicine MSTP MD/PhD program for 13 years. Dr. Aagaard has always remained dedicated to serving pregnant patients as their physician, and she has been elected to Texas SuperDoctors every year for over a decade.In addition to her role as a direct patient care maternal fetal medicine physician, Dr. Aagaard has been dedicated to findings cures through research. With continuous NIH funding since 2005, she and her team members have shared their landmark discoveries and developed technologies that have enriched translational and discovery science, particularly within perinatal and pregnancy-related research. Dr. Aagaard has been supported in this work by funding from the March of Dimes, the Burroughs Welcome Fund, USAID, the Gates Foundation, the Thrasher Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Nationally, she has served on multiple NIH and National Academy of Sciences Committees and Advisory panels, multiple society leadership roles, and was a permanent member of the NICHD Pregnancy & Neonatology study section through 2017. Dr. Aagaard's sentinel set of scientific contributions has centered around (1) developing novel and relevant primate models for translational research, (2) conducting high impact discovery science with a wide set of 'omics technologies, and (3) executing high impact, high rigor clinical trials research. She and her team have published over 290 original manuscripts.Dr. Aagaard has devoted considerable time to the greater Houston community. This includes volunteering her professional time and talent with organizations such as the San Jose Clinic, Avon Walk for the Cure, and the Baylor Teen Health Clinics. Over the last 11 years, she has been an active volunteer with her children's schools and sports programs, including Condit Elementary, Bellaire Little League, Pin Oak Middle School, Bellaire High School and the Bellaire High School Football Boosters, St. Thomas Episcopal School, and St. Olaf College Touchdown Club. In 2011 Dr. Aagaard was recognized by the Houston community with receipt of the Houston Women's Magazine "Maximum Mom" Award which is awarded "to a woman who has been an extraordinary mother to her children and mentor to others in providing strong moral character and serving as a role model".You can find Dr. Aagaard caring for patients at HCA Houston Tomball, Conroe, Northwest or The Woman's Hospital of Texas hospitals. Biography: Dr. Nima Goharkhay is the Medical Director of the Pregnancy Specialty Center of Texas. He is board certified in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). He is a member of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (ACOG). Dr. Goharkhay holds a PhD in Cell Biology. Prior to founding the Pregnancy Specialty Center of Texas, he was Medical Director at Texas MFM, and a perinatologist with Maryland Perinatal Associates in the Washington DC area, where he also served as Quality Control Representative. He is a Voluntary Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was a Women's Reproductive Health Scholar and faculty member at that institution until 2009. Dr. Goharkhay has a strong interest in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, diabetes in pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis, maternal complications in pregnancy and developmental programming of disease. He has participated in research studies sponsored by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network of the NICHD and has had independent research support by the NIH and the National Perinatal Foundation, among others, and has authored numerous articles. He was recognized for his research by the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and was Researcher of the Month at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in December 2007. Dr. Goharkhay was honored by the BIRTH organization in both 2015 and 2016 for his support of the midwife and natural birth communities in the Houston area. Dr. Goharkhay completed his fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and his residency at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He earned his medical degree at the University of Vienna in Austria and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is fluent in Spanish, German and Persian.
