Got his number from the employee assistance program (EAP) through my work. I was hoping to get a counselor to get me through a difficult time. When he returned my call, his tone was very defensive and he asked me about how I got his number. I told him I got it through EAP. He then proceeded to tell me that I would need to get an authorization code because "he wasn't sure who he would be billing". I understood this, but the EAP told me to make contact with the counselor first prior to obtaining the code. Just from one minute over the phone, Stephen came across as hostile and defensive. I told him I was no longer interested in pursuing counseling with him. If he or someone from his office reads this, I hope he can learn that people who reach out to him are looking for help. I understand it can be confusing getting calls from numbers you don't recognize/ it makes sense that he wants to make a living off of his services. But there is no need need to present these issues to a potential new client before they've even gotten a chance to know you.

Invaluable expertise and wisdom
Really appreciated Steve's work with me getting me through a rough patch. When you're in the throes of depression, you really can't see clearly or make decisions clearly and he understands that. Was willing to hold me accountable and give me the guidance I needed (first: work with my provider, and get the meds I needed). Then over time, was able to rebuild the confidence and clarity I needed to move forward.I would add and as a counter to some other reviews: Steve is no-nonsense. If you're not accustomed to having someone be direct or occasionally curt with you, you may not like his style. But I think most people need a little reality check here and there and Steve will give that to you.

Steve is a thoughtful experienced therapist.
I had 6 sessions with Steve Regner. I found him to be a thoughtful, experienced therapist. His office is no frills (no leather couches), but he was excellent at helping me to work through and change behaviors I'd struggled with for year. I am really grateful for him sharing simple concepts and ideas that has helped me be a better person, improve my relationships with my family and helped me reduce my overall levels of stress in my life.

Long-Term Client with Positive Results
I used Steve's services for about 14 months both in-person and then over the phone once I left Portland. He employed a pragmatic and direct approach to help me deal with my problems and held me accountable throughout our sessions. I enjoyed that the most about Steve: His ability to give sound guidance and advice on how I can resolve my problems and hold me accountable to in fact resolve them. I would recommend Steve to anyone who wants an efficient and practical method in dealing with their own needs.

Unprofessional and uncaring therapist
My husband and I contacted Stephen for couples counseling. We were going through a crisis and he was the only counselor who responded. I quickly realized that Stephen's style is different than any other counselor I've worked with - he is very curt and direct, and would often interrupt to cut us off or redirect the conversation. As time went on, I realized I was trusting him less as it felt like he was judgmental and didn't care. We had had about 4 or 5 appointments with him at that point. However, the final straw came when my son tested positive for COVID the day before we had a scheduled appointment. I called him that night after we received the test results, and left a voicemail since it was after hours. The next day when we missed our appointment, I expected him to call us back to reschedule. He did not call back until two days later, and didn't even express any concern that our son was sick. It was obvious he doesn't care at all, and we will definitely not be returning.

Unprofessional
While I was traveling, Stephen apparently left a voicemail for a follow-up appointment and arbitrarily picked a date/time of his choosing without my confirmation or knowledge. He then tried to hold me financially responsible when I did not show up for an appointment that I had no idea even existed.

I had an initial onboarding session. Went fine, scheduled a follow up 3 weeks out. Day of the follow up I needed to cancel, so left him a message apologizing asking if we could reschedule. Got a return call in 30 minutes. Was told that typically would charge me $50 for late cancellation (didn't give 24 hours notice). I apologized again, he told me that I knew he needed 24 hours, and he can't manage his calendar that way. Then informed me that I needed to find a new provider, said goodbye and hung up. Seemed more than a little rigid, and abrupt.

Stephen was absolutely integral to my healing. I was going through a very difficult time earlier in 2019, and I appreciated Stephen's logical, no-nonsense approach to helping me work through my emotions and behaviors. He may come across very analytical at first, but he is trying to gather facts to create an approach that works for you. He is very warm and approachable, and I enjoyed our sessions that resulted in realistic, actionable solutions. I truly believe he saved my life in many ways. Thank you, Stephen!

I wished I had read reviews first (see Y3lp). We wanted counseling for our kids after a tragic death in the family. Like two reviewers on Y3lp, we found Stephen through EAP, he was available, and that should have been our first clue. Our fourth appt, the judgmental Stephen described in other reviews ferociously attacked me. I told him my heart was racing as he made me feel so uncomfortable. I was seeking a kind supporting counselor for our kids, he was not. Five minutes in, I told him we would not be needing his awful services. He stared at me with anger and contempt while I gathered my family on the way out the door. I would strongly discourage anyone from working with Stephen. Don't let the convenience of his empty schedule lure you in. EAP is his path to new victims. Stephen isn't good with children, he is angry, selfish, agitated, self-righteous, judgmental counselor who doesn't seem to have a kind, courteous, caring, supportive, bone in his body. His poor soul needs counseling.

Steve has been instrumental in helping me identify ways to not only recognize the variety of feelings and emotions I have in different situations, but he suggests ways to help me navigate the waters confidently. My therapy has been a lot of hard work, but Steve has been there supporting me the entire way. I appreciate his straight-forward approach, excellent listening skills, and trust in his ability. Steve is very skilled in what he does and brings a lot of value to my mental clarity.
