Unhelpful, unprofessional, and unkind
This mental health professional was anything but what I needed. Early in my path of recovery, I came to her through Sondermind. Not only were her sessions devoid of any meaningful content, such as techniques or tools for processing and reflection, she spent most of the time pressuring me to get a sponsor with AA. I would continually express to her that I was uncomfortable both with the AA format and with the notion of asking a stranger for help, but she refused to offer any help herself. Ultimately, she made my having a sponsor an ultimatum, at which point I simply took my leave. I am happy to say that I have since worked with other, much more qualified, insightful, patient, attentive, and professional mental health professionals and have both maintained my sobriety and continued to heal. Why people with no heart (or skill) go into this field I will never know. I guess it is easier than med school.
