My mother came in with signs of a stroke and Kelly had performed a basic screening to assess for one. My mother had all the basic signs of a classic stroke, and yet, the provider deemed it negative after performing her evaluation that didn’t include imaging testing & was preparing her discharge papers to send her home (this was a clinic appointment). Convinced my mother was having a stroke, we insisted she be administered an MRI scan to definitively rule it out, & per our insistence as advocates for my mother, this provider relented & advised we go to the ER where they had the requisite equipment available, as the clinic did not have it. Despite my mother’s classic symptoms yet somehow assessed as negative for stroke, the MRI scans revealed my mother was, in fact, having a stroke. Had we not insisted on imaging testing & listened to the providers ‘professional assessment’, my mothers situation could have led to something fatal. Inability to follow up with terminally-ill patients with respiratory difficulties who were discharged from hospital, other than insisting through video chat. It seems insulting to reduce their symptoms to a video call when the basis of their hospitalization requires a physical evaluation. Covid has most certainly altered the landscape of how physicians and medical staff interact with patients; for some, it seems their commitment to patients is conditional on what the physician feels is in their best interest, rather than following basic medical protocol. This was the case for my father who required an in-person evaluation prior to a scheduled round of chemotherapy a week after- the latter conditional on the former’s results. It’s so unfortunate that this physician felt a video call was appropriate enough of a method of addressing his physical concerns. If you are seeking a physician who genuinely cares & doesn’t place personal interest ahead of profession, look elsewhere.
