We had a concerning moment with our infant daughter—who has a shunt—when we noticed her fontanelle felt unusually hard and full. Naturally, we were anxious and wanted medical reassurance, so we contacted the on-call doctor and received a call back from Katie Lichty.Unfortunately, the call left us feeling dismissed and unheard. When my fiancée explained what we were noticing, the response was, “You’re telling me two different things,” which felt unnecessarily critical. When I tried to clarify that we were talking about the top of her head, I was told, “We really don’t worry or care about that,” followed by a comment about other babies’ fontanelles closing early.We weren’t trying to overreact—we were scared parents trying to do the right thing. We understand some things may not always be medically urgent, but being brushed off in such a cold and dismissive tone was incredibly disappointing. A little compassion goes a long way in situations like this.
