At the end of a counseling session with Dr. Stone, whom I saw periodically over a ten year period, he listened to my question and stared at me for about a minute and a half. He never broke the stare. The awkwardness was beyond bizarre. I finally had to break the silence by asking him, "Why are you staring at me for so long?" His response: "I don't know what to say. I don't know how to help you." I then asked, "Do you know of any other counselor that might be able to help me, Jeff, regarding my working through the abandonment and severe abuse by my parents when I was a child? Any referrals?" His response was "No." Then I asked if we could set another appointment to address some other issues. He said, "I really don't know what to do." As a therapist myself for many years, I suddenly saw a side to him that was very freaky, his staring for so long. Who does that? Besides not showing the least amount of compassion, he would not provide one referral (let alone at least three tha
