Janet Kass, LCSW

I've been a client of Janet's for over two years. This therapeutic relationship, more than any other (and I've been in a LOT of therapy) has fundamentally changed me in very healing ways. I can't recommend Janet Kass enough. I am so grateful for Janet's mindful approach, her ability to connect and reflect my patterns back to me (so I can learn from them), and her deep expertise. I feel that she has always had my best interests at heart (helping me grow and transform my relationship with my mother, my romantic relationships, and most importantly my relationship with myself). Two years ago, I was in and out of very challenging romantic relationships, in a parentified role with my mother, and unable to identify or sit with my feelings. Today, I am experiencing a freedom within myself; a new connection to myself and others, and an ability to be truly intimate with my wonderful partner. My mom and I are working on a new relationship that breaks free of the dynamics of the past 35 years.

I made the mistake of meeting with this woman and this was probably the weirdest and most disturbing session I’ve ever personally experienced. First, she wanted to do a physical touch exercise that I was not comfortable with where she wanted me to clasp hands with her and wrestle against her, because this was supposed to be empowering for some reason… I had visited her to specifically speak about my sometimes-difficult relationship with my mother (whose isn’t?) and her response was to completely cut her off because her actions were - and I quote - “almost like she’s r*ping you”. Now, nowhere in my explanation was there anything sexual or even remotely close to comparing such a horrible thing, let alone comparing my mom to that… it didn’t sit well with me, and as a survivor of sexual assault, I found her flippant use of that kind of language very, very troubling. Suffice to say I did not make a follow-up appointment.
