Worst Appt Ever
He couldn’t answer my detailed questions about the treatment therapy he was recommending. I felt like I knew from my crash course, more than he did. No eye contact, on his computer virtually the whole time scrambling to provide information he should have had in his head. He was as rude and dismissive. Stay away. I went elsewhere and found a wonderful oncologist to oversee my journey through this.

Unfortunately, my mom had Dr. Chen for her doctor when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2023.She was hit hard and fast radiation and chemo, October 2023 my mom was cancer free. Dr. Chen advised lung X-rays and brain MRI as cancer typically spreads there. On a Thursday in April 2024 my mom was admitted to the hospital and we found out that night it's common for the cancer to metastasis to the liver, which is what happened. We had to ASK for Dr. Chen Friday afternoon to come talk to us- he came in the room and said 'it's bad, your liver is full of cancer, your liver is failing, the best option would be to go home on hospice.'My mom died less than a week later. We were never told about cancer spreading to the liver. She never had a PET scan done.. Dr. Chen has NO bedside manners and made no personal connections, she dreaded his appointments and felt like a number. We had talked about switching providers but we stuck it out with him and now it's such a regret I have.

Terminally ill patient
My husband had Ocular Melanoma, terminal, and can't be treated by chemo or other treatments. Dr. Chen talked my husband into Immunotherapy of which he knew wasn't going to help, and after his first immunotherapy, he had very bad side effects. I called the nurses who told Dr. Chen. They did nothing, then did the 2nd dose of immunotherapy, my husband became toxic, and was dying. Dr. Chen yelled at him in his office, and my husband was so bad he couldn't comprehend what was going on. The next morning I had to call in Hospice my self. The palliative care appoint was a month out. In my opinion, the staff and Doctor were clueless. Find another doctor.

I am a current patient of Dr. Chen's in Muskegon. Several weeks ago he had to tell me that my diagnosed cancer had no treatment and I had "months" to live. We did have blood work done for a particular gene, just in case. About a week or so later I was called to come in to see him. As he walked in he had a huge smile on his face. I did have the gene mutation, plus the cancer I have is not the one the pathologists at U of M thought. It is a likely return of the stage 3 melanoma I had 20 years ago and have been in long-term NED (no evidence of disease) from. There IS a treatment and my body is already positively reacting to it. I am beyond thrilled. I had lost hope. I am so grateful that Dr. Chen is my Oncologist.

Also the other incident occurred on Friday August 27, Dr Chen came in my dads room and stood at the foot of the bed, and began asking a few questions and said he though he should forget about these medical procedures and be on hospice. He said this in front of my mom and dad. My dad said “NO” he then just turned around and left the room. After he left, the nurse came in and my dad told her about the incident. At that time the nurse went and got her supervisor who came in and spoke with both mom and dad. She indicated that she would handle the situation and apologized. Trust me this doctor is not welcome in the care of my dad. You have so many other quality capable, staff that can handle him. This is not acceptable and you shouldn’t tolerate this type of care in your facility. I do want to recognize a few exceptional team members MaryBeth and Dr Cee (I think I have name correct) 5 North , these two are examples for your team to follow. I am awaiting your reply and anxious

My primary care provider went through a great deal of trouble (& some Divine intervention) to get Dr. Chen to treat my stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer (metastasized to the lymph nodes, bones & brain), because her years of experience with him convinced her that he's the best. His prescription of low dose radiation to the head shrank the 9 brain tumors to almost half size (so they don't cause symptoms anymore) & "targetted treatment" (pills) killed the rest of the cancer in my body. The turnaround in my health is nothing short of amazing! When the test came back saying I had the right mutation for the targetted treatment, Dr. Chen was SO excited! He has my best interest at heart. When one medication sapped my energy, he switched me to a similar one for the sake of better quality of life. He's open to my reintroduction of herbs & supplements. His team of nurses has been most helpful in explaining things & making suggestions, especially through the patient portal.

I am very honored to provide Dr. Yuanbin Chen with a positive recommendation. When diagnosed with Lung Cancer, Dr. Chen provided me with all of the potential treatment options and then recommended that I take an aggressive approach which included chemotherapy, radiation and Immunotherapy. His overall demeanor is very direct but in a friendly way. Of course I was scared to find out that I had lung cancer, but confident that I was in the right place with the right Oncologist. His entire team treated me with great respect and made sure I was aware of what to expect with each treatment. I would certainly recommend Dr. Chen to anyone with a condition similar to mine.

My mom was referred to Dr. Chen in April. We have found him to be very "cold" in his approach to her Stage 4 lung cancer. He shows little compassion and spends more time looking at the computer than his patient. We have had to correct the medical information he has said to mom during office visits, he mumbles and is very difficult to hear/understand. We have now visited his office for care 7 times and he has yet to lay a hand on her, listen to her chest or get within 3 feet of her during a visit. We have also had to communicate directly with other providers (PCP and Pulmonary Specialists) because he fails to do so. Certainly not the comprehensive, team based care we were led to believe this practice touts in its literature. Additionally, the website is less than useful --- no "provider notes" and have never received an after visit summary that contains anything more than vital signs, medications she is on and the lab results. No recommendation from our experience.

No patient with cancer should be subjected to Dr. Chen and his cold, careless manner. He has no respect for the patient or the family as actual people with feelings. He has done nothing to give us options, provide us with any hope or inspire us in any way. We requested he not return to my MIL's hospital room after a particularly rude and disrespectful encounter. This is not how Spectrum Health should want their doctors to behave or treat their patients. We recommend a review of his approach.

Dr Chen treated me for lung cancer. He was sensitive to my anxiety about chemotherapy and prescribed anti-anxiety medication to prevent nausea which I never experienced. He listened and was positive which impacted my mood and experiences with treatment in a good way.

No bedside manner rude abrupt. I would never recommend a patient with cancer to him. gives no hope to patients with cancer, instead says you have this long to live. No hope you turn patients into despair instead of hope. Worst oncologist ever. Spectrum Health supports his behavior and will not treat patients unless they are affiliated with spectrum Health doctors. Rude, Inappropriate, Hospital politics take more precedence over patient care. No donations again!
