Finally, a solution to years of chronic pain!
I normally never write reviews, but I wanted to make sure this doctor gets credit for the amazing work he did. I came to Dr. Sanders for a second opinion, and he correctly located the rare problem my first doctor missed. He recommended several treatment options and honestly explained their pros and cons, citing scientific literature along the way to help me gauge what potential outcomes I could expect from each option. I also appreciated his willingness to talk through mine and my family’s questions throughout the process as I weighed my decision - it definitely helped me feel more comfortable electing for surgery. If you’re looking for a professional who is clearly an expert in his field but is also a wonderful person, Dr. Sanders is the guy for you. My experience with him from first visit to surgical recovery has been nothing short of amazing, and I’d recommend him to everyone.

Dr. Sanders was a true breath of fresh air after dealing with a chronic ankle injury for 15 years. He listened to my concerns and understood that my pain and restrictions were a limiting factor; even if they weren’t “disabling.” I felt like I could trust Dr. Sanders to assess my past injury, current issues, and figure out the best path forward. We tried physical therapy but after limited progress, opted for a steroid injection. I truly appreciate Dr. Sanders’ “conservative” approach relative to opting for surgery which I went in ready to do (based on past assessments.) If you need help for an acute injury or long term, Dr. Sanders is the doctor for the job. I say this as someone with a life long history of being a patient with chronic illness and also as a health services research who specializes in value-based payment.

Answers questions/concerns. Responds to emails relatively promptly. Surgery itself was ok in terms quality of work. I’ve seen neater closures of incisions which helps in the incision healing well and decrease scar formation.

When my son broke his ankle and injured several ligaments in a wrestling tournament, our main goal was for him to return from the injury quickly, safely and on track to continue his athletic pursuits. Dr. Sanders was the right doctor to help us navigate his recovery. He is incredibly talented in the operating room and he knows how to speak the language of a top tier athlete. As this was our first significant bone/ligament trauma, we were certainly concerned about our ability to find a great doctor...we definitely found that in Dr. Sanders. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a sports specialist for foot and ankle.

Thomas Sanders, MD is a highly skilled, knowledgeable, forthright, competent, and innovative orthopedic surgeon. I was taken to Virginia Hospital Center on 04 March 2018, highly septic and unable to move. I was diagnosed with a severe fungal infection, gaseous gangrene, and extreme septisemia spreading rapidly. Using state-of-the-art technology, including a wound vac, Dr. Sanders was able to halt the progression of the gaseous gangrene and remove the burden of my disease.

Dr. Sanders performed for me a forearm surgery which required a metal implant to fix the fracture. The surgery was totally successful and he showed competence in follow up visits, taking care of the healing process.
