Misdiagnosed and Sent Home
On Jan 30, we visited St. Jude ER at 3 AM because my mom developed rashes around her waist, and we were concerned it could be shingles. After waiting for three hours, we finally saw Dr. Thien Nguyen at 6 AM. We explicitly mentioned our concern about shingles, but after a brief glance, he dismissed it as hives and sent us home with painkillers.By Jan 31, my mom’s rash had developed water-filled blisters, so we went to our family doctor, who immediately diagnosed it as shingles. He emphasized that early treatment within 72 hours is critical, meaning we lost valuable treatment time due to Dr. Nguyen’s misdiagnosis.It is extremely frustrating and unacceptable that an ER doctor could not recognize a common condition like shingles, delaying necessary treatment and causing unnecessary suffering. Misdiagnoses like this can have serious consequences, and this experience has completely eroded our trust in St. Jude’s ER.
