Dr. Chang performed cervical spine surgery on me, removing disks in C3-C7 and relieving severe stenosis; also fusing the vertebrae. The procedure lasted over 5 hours and entailed several surprises. I was released from the hospital largely pain free within 48 hours after surgery. I am now 2 weeks out from surgery and haven't taken opioid pain meds since the night of the surgery.

Awesome results
I went to Dr. Chang for a second opinion. From the moment of my first contact with his office all the way through surgery and recovery his staff and the doctor were awesome. The doctor took his time and made sure I completely understood what he was going to do and what to expect after surgery. The hidden gem in his office is his practice coordinator Sue. When I had questions, she got answers and made me feel like I was important. Everyone I interacted with at this practice works there because they want too and it shows when they interact with patients.

Giterdone...the right way.
Dr Chang was friendly and professional quick and to the point. If you want to include friendly banter that won't last long. He is not humorless, he's just busy, don't take it personally. There are patients to see and schedules to keep. If you want a doc and team that will take good care of you and fix the problem then you have the right group.

craniotomy/cranioplasty
Our son was in a roll over car accident and suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. Fortunately for him, Dr. Chang was available and wanted to perform the emergency craniotomy to relieve the pressure building in our son's head. Dr. Chang and his surgical team's quick work, saved our son's life. There are really no words to express our gratitude for Dr. Chang and his team for what they did that day. Dr. Chang was courteous, respectful and had empathy for us and our son's situation. He took time to explain to us what was being done to and for our son, what all potential outcomes were and answered any and all questions we had. His confidence was reassuring that our son's life was in competent hands. His office staff was extremely helpful, communicative and always took the time to walk us through the next steps we need to take.

Dr. Chang came highly recommended. I had lived with low back pain for years. September 2022 I underwent lumbar spinal fusion L4-L5. Three months post surgery and I am nearly pain free. I am very grateful to Dr. Chang and his entire staff. They were terrific from beginning to end. Thank you.

Laminectomy
Steven Chang is a wonder surgeon and has a talented team behind him. The entire process was extremely easy, and you can tell that Dr. Chang really cares about his patient's wellbeing and will not perform a surgery that is too dangerous. I had a laminectomy at Chandler Regional and everything went wonderfully. I highly recommend Dr Chang if you are looking for a surgeon.

Great Dr.!
Dr. Chang knew I was having major pain, got me into his office quickly, had MRI much quicker than other doctors that I saw, and did an amazing job during surgery to completely eliviate my pain. His office is great to work with, very punctual and coordinated. They are a great organization to work with!

Dr. Chang performed a craniotomy on me on October 24, 2013 for Trigeminal Neuralgia categorized as TN1. My wife asked before the surgery how many had he performed and his response was we were asking the wrong question. As an experienced now very educated sufferer, it was the right question and I should’ve moved on. My attempts to even get some basic level of help after surgery were futile. I had the same surgery @ Mayo in 2017 referred to as a redo. The surgeon, recommended by the Facial Pain Association found severe compression on what should have been a decompressed nerve due to the materials implanted by Dr. Chang. An 8 hour surgery removed as much material as the surgeon felt comfortable and capable of doing. I am still left with what is known as atypical trigeminal neuralgia categorized as TN2 with occasional episodes of electrical shocks that are associated with TN1. A third surgery is planned with a true expert @ UCI Irvine. Dr Chang left me with 24/7 life changing-chronic pain.

In my opinion, Dr. Steve Chang is a skilled surgeon! He and his staff were always professional and caring. I had spinal stenosis and a slipped disk that has caused me considerable pain for the past 5 years. I tried medications, physical therapy and pain management to no avail. He was referred to me by Dr. Reddy. He ordered several scans to find the problem. We had to communicate thru Telemed and he showed me the x-rays as to why I was in so much discomfort. My surgery was a complete success and I awoke feeling no more pain in my lower back or legs. I also can stand straight up again... I highly recommend him and his team at Barrows. Thank you, Dr. Steve Chang!

Dr Chang has been my doctor since 2012. He has a great personality, is very informative and answers all questions with confidence. I like that he always asks how my family is doing and to tell them hi. I've had neck surgery and lower back surgery with him and I feel great. He is the number #1 Neurosurgeon in the USA!!!!

Recently had surgery with Dr. Chang. I'm feeling much better after surgery... I only have one issue with Dr. Chang the day after my surgery he spent no more than two minutes with me in the hospital. My follow-up visit was about the same. He seems like he's always in a rush. I have no question that he's a great surgeon. I just wish that he would spend a little bit more time with his patients it's not like you're having a splinter taking out of your finger. This is spinal surgery. I also NEVER received a phone call from his office after surgery along with Barrow Hospital. I've had a few surgeries in the past and the doctor and or staff and the Hospital always call the next day .. A bit disappointing they may do this for a living and deal with it day in and day out but having spinal surgery for the first time it's a little nerve-racking. And not getting a phone call from your surgeon and or his staff and the hospital didn't sit well with me

When someone is in acute pain, you want Dr Chang. He's an expert, BUT, patient care is NOT just about the surgery, it is very much about post surgical care. In this area, I would rate the experience a 1. My fiance had scant information about the process (including ZERO info on needing to stay overnight in the hospital), ZERO information about what post surgery would look like& feel like. RIght now my fiance has been on the phone with Chang's office trying to get info relative to the overbearing pain he has & has been transferred 3 times. No one will take the time to address his call. The first nurse he spoke with in Chang's office transferred him to the ER. Ridiculous. This is POST SURGICAL CARE people... your office should be as equally concerned about a patient right after surgery as you are before surgery. Now, after talking to 3 people, Chang's office told him they are too busy to answer his questions & they will call him back. I cannot believe how unprofessional this is.
