The office cancelled my appointment when I informed them I’d had previous back surgery. Offering a second opinion is not worthy of their time.

Wore my back out running and in the Air Force, Dr. Shogan did a simple L4/5 aspen clip to fuse that level and re-architectured my low back 12 years ago, rehab'd myself, am fully functional now, and haven't had back pain since. I'm a doc and I've been referring to neurosurgeons for 35 years... Doc Shogan was my personal choice

I have known Stephen for many years and his wonderful reputation. When Doctor Dennis Chang refereed me to him I knew I was going to be treated " by the best." I very much appreciate his conservative approach. He provided me with options.

DAVID GOODMAN – May 19, 2020

A routine MRI for my MS revealed a major bone spur in my cervical spine that was intruding into the spinal cord, which could explain why my walking had deteriorated significantly. I felt lucky to be able to see Dr. Shogan since he has had the reputation as the best neurosurgeon in Denver for many years. He also has the reputation for being the most conservative physician when it comes to recommending surgery. He showed the MRI to me, which looked really ugly. He said he couldn't promise that I would get better but felt I would get a lot worse if the spur continued to grow. I chose surgery, and although I have known many people who have had terrible luck with cervical surgery, I felt confident that I was in good hands. The surgery was very difficult and lasted 3 hours. The only pain I felt post surgery was in my esophagus since it had to be moved over to get to the spur. That went away in a couple of days and I haven't felt any pain since. My walking immediately improved.

I had a tumor (later determined to be noncancerous) inside the dura (the membrane that covers the spinal cord). The tumor was compressing the spinal cord, and my feet and lower legs became progressively weaker and lost most sensation. The surgery required removal of part of a spinal vertebra and exposing the spinal cord. I'm happy to say, two months post-op, that I have recovered all sensation and strength in both legs. Dr. Shogan was generous with his time in explaining my condition and the surgery.

Dr. Shogan is all I ask for in a doctor. He answers my questions in a straight forward manner. I feel he is being honest with me and not just telling me things I want to hear. He explains things to me patiently when I have a question and I feel he will be available to me if I need to see him. Bottom line, I trust him and his opinion.

Dr Shogan is the ultimate professional, always dressed in a tailored suit, he is polite, he listens carefully, explains fully, and his assistant, Becky is upbeat and happy to help as well. I am scheduled for surgery next month so I can’t speak about that, but I have total faith in him which is why I chose him as my surgeon.
