Not a good experience...
Initially saw Dr. Chin at Straub Hospital for non-cancerous enlarged prostate with all the common problems that condition entails. He recommended the 'gold standard' treatment which was a procedure that had a significant side effect. I scheduled the procedure, BUT I did my own research and found out about Urolift (no side effects). Called Dr Chin back and he said it was true that I was a perfect candidate for Urolift, but he did not do that procedure (?!?!?). Sooo, I asked who did and it was another Doctor that works at Straub! Had the procedure with no problems. I'll always think he should have mentioned this option. Regarding a different procedure he was dismissive, curt (not rude, but close), and in such a hurry that I was scheduled for surgery without knowing much of anything. I have to take some of that responsibility as I probably should have been more insistent. I do hate being pushy though. I canceled- I'll find a different Urologist.

Had a lithotripsy done and a phone follow up after 7 days. I was told by Dr. Chin over the phone that he placed a stent and for me to get a compact mirror to look below and remove stent by pulling on the white string. I couldn’t find the string and went to ER on Maui who also didn’t find a string and urologist on staff recommended going in with a scope. I refused and waited for Dr chin to call me back and the response “I’m sorry but I didn’t put a stent in”. Very unprofessional

I will never recommend this doctor to anyone
He shouldn’t be a doctor and his staff gives the wrong information for everything from after care to follow up appointments and the wrong building to go to. Shame on his family. He doesn’t deserve any stars

My experience with Dr Chinn was unbelievable. I was recommended to him for urinary problems i had. During our first appointment he told me my problem was my gross lack of water consumption. He never asked how much water i drank. I was told to come back in a week. Then he told me i had so much water in my bladder my life expectancy was not long and told me it was my fault. I went to another appointment and was told the different surgery options i had and clearly pointed out only one of them was right for me. ‘It was no longer taught in school to new doctors and he was my best option.’ I decided to get other opinions from doctors. I read that Dr Chinn had other patients with very very bad experiences. I will never return to DR Chinn. Ive now had my surgery done elsewhere. No doctors i spoke to advised the same procedure that DR Chinn did.

This doctor never asked about my symptoms or my thoughts re the many invasive procedures he “decreed upon me”. When I asked clarification questions he took a patronizing tone. When I asked about possibly waiting 3 months and monitoring my status in that time, he became frustrated and abruptly ended the visit. He refused to enter into any dialogue with me. He also began the visit stating many negative things about my primary doctor’s notes which was unprofessional, and upsetting.

After a phone consult prior to a procedure - was dismayed by the tone of voice and rude demeanor - canceled procedure after another health professional told me if the consult was unsatisfactory - would you want him to the procedure?? Obvious answer:: NO. Also, was informed by same professional if a complication took place during the procedure another Dr. would highly unlikely accept me as a patient. Found another MORE qualified urologist that I feel more comfortable seeing .

The office staff stinks. Stupid and incompetent. I tried 3 times to get an appt, and they messed it up every time. I guess they want me to go elsewhere.

I was sent to Dr. Chinn after a night in the Straub ER. I could not urinate. I found Dr. Chinn to be extremely competent. He even diagnosed another condition I was suffering from before I could ask him what it was. I whole heartily would recommend Dr. Chinn to anyone seek a urologist.

Although competent, Dr. Chinn has the worst bedside manner of any doctor I've ever encountered. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, my wife and I had numerous questions. He told us that he would not answer any questions, and handed us a brief pamphlet from drug-maker Astra Zeneca. When his name comes up at our support group, everyone groans. If you are looking for an empathetic physician who is eager to help you understand what is happening within your body, Dr. Chinn is not for you.

Dr Stephen Chen performed a pileloplasty surgery on me 15 years ago and I was completely satisfied with his professional manner and expertise knowledge. He is truly one of Hawaiis finest doctors in Urology, and I'm very thankful that I was able to have him perform my surgery to correct my problem years ago. He also showed me patience and concern about my medical situation, and was very thorough in what he intended to do. If I had to do this again, I wouldn't change a thing! Thank you Dr Chen!

Been my doctor for about 8 years: all business, bedside manner wasn't user friendly. I just saw him, he's a changed man. Happy, positive ,receptive , my kind of doctor. Top of the line surgeon, he did me, an now a man I can talk to who makes me feel at ease. Well done Doctor Chinn
