Dr. Shamala Kanchan, MD

I saw Dr. Kanchan monthly for almost five years. I always wanted to change providers but wasn't able to. She's blunt to the point of rude (in her own words, I wasn't even a sensitive or complicated case). Most of the time, appointments felt cold, mechanical, and obligatory; just meds dispensed and getting hurried out.

Dr. Kanchan is compassionate and a good listener. I have been seeing her for many years. She has helped me sort out a good combination of medications for my complex of problems and has been a driving force in helping me to move forward toward my goals.

Doctor Kanchan is rude, dismissive and cruel. She was consistently late to our appointments and spent as little time with me as possible. She answered her cellphone during one session and let the office admin in during another. She is accusatory and expects the worst from her patients even when they've done nothing wrong. She doesn't care to listen, only push more unnecessary medications. If something wasn't working. Instead of trying something else, she just added something on. At one point, she had me taking five different meds. I stopped going to her after I realized I left every session feeling worse than I did before. If you value your mental health, DO NOT go to Dr. Kanchan. She does not care about her patients.

$1000 (cash patient) for 10 minutes of her preoccupied with other things AND answered her cell phone! So unprofessional. She had nothing to say really. There’s a difference between intelligence and education, she has the latter and lacks the former.

I'm a 30 something overworked tech employee. I've seen Dr. Kanchan for the better part of 1.5 years. Her style fits well with what I'm looking for: straight shooter, tough love when needed, but also genuine empathy. A year ago I would have said my problems were literally impossible to solve without medication. Today I'm at a place where I don't need them. She's played a massive role in my mental health rejuvenation. Strong recommend.

I've seen her 4 times now in 2 weeks and each time she wants to charge me for a full hour because she says she needs to provide "support," but really she's just preaching her personal values. I guess she thinks mine are bad. Then when I had a bad reaction to medication she prescribed, she didn't return my call. I had to go to the ER. Not great care.

Dr. Kanchan is very kind, empathetic, very good listener and is generally very concerned about the overall health of her patients. I have recommended her a few times because she has really helped me in my depression and helped me to advocate for myself in my recovery during this time. Anyone who says anything otherwise about her, simply has unrealistic expectations or they are looking to transfer blame where it shouldn't be. Dr. Kanchan is the BEST psychiatrist I have ever seen!

Dr. Kanchan has been my doctor for more than a year and a half. She is professional and caring. She helped me during a very dark time. It took her a short amount of time to diagnose and treat me. We had to change my medication a couple of times. The changes went smoothly with no problems. She listened to me about my situation with interest and empathy. I respect Dr. Kanchan and her methods of treatment.
