Dr. Scott Shawen, MD

I saw Dr. Scott Shawen at OrthoCarolina for a second opinion on a posterior tibial tendon rupture, and I’m so glad I did. He clearly explained my diagnosis and walked me through all treatment options. We ultimately moved forward with surgery, and the experience—from pre-op to recovery—was excellent. Dr. Shawen is knowledgeable, compassionate, and never made me feel rushed. His aftercare and follow-up were outstanding. I highly recommend him for anyone facing a complex foot or ankle issue.

I sought out Dr. Shawen due to his formative experience at Walter Read Army Medical Center where he dealt with osteopathic cases far more challenging than mine. Mine was a complex fracture (4 breaks, 2 tibia and 2 fibula) that had first been set in a cast by someone else, then accidentally broken again as it nearly healed. Add to that, a diabetic, I was concerned about infection that might lead to amputation. Also, I destroyed my ankle from hobbling on the deformed leg for years. Visits to fine specialists at facilities like Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC and Yale-New Haven Hospital in CT had me thinking 2 surgeries were required, one to straighten the leg, one to fuse the ankle with long periods of convalescence and PT follow-up. Not what I wanted to look forward to. Dr. Shawen assessed my X-rays and said he’d straighten the leg and fuse the ankle in one surgery. What he did to get my leg nearly back to normal, well, he’s an osteopathic artist. And a great guy as well!

2nd follow up with Dr. Shawen after foot surgery. I highly recommend him as a surgeon who takes the time to really understand a patient's individual health situation & prescribe the RIGHT treatment plan. Patient and caring, and took the time I needed to answer questions & provide reasonable expectations. Very kind and talented surgeon.

God has blessed me to keep my life and to send me to the greatest surgeon, I could've asked for.......not only did he look into my needs. he gave me hope with a chance to continue life. When one loses the ability to walk. Dr. S. Shawen is an excellent doctor. I had an ankle replacement November of 2023. Not in South Carolina very long, I had difficulty who to choose, I researched and decided on Dr. Shawen. Before agreeing to go ahead with the surgery, I decided to go back up north to an ankle doctor who had done prior surgery on the same foot. The feedback that I got from my up-north doctor he said to me 'I don't know how you found or picked Dr. Shawen, but not only do I know of Dr. Shawen, I would let him do this surgery on me.' That was it Dr. Shawen was the one. Well, he explained everything in detail answered every question, did not rush thru any of my appointments and so, so knowledgeable. It was big surgery going thru an ankle replacement.Dr. Shawen is so kindhearted has a wonderful bedside manner and really cares about his patients. Very impressive doctor. With exam, Analyzed details with an audio recorder for personal notes. Displayed a very well educated and experienced professional with his medical vocabulary and demeanor. He answered all my questions and I left there feeling confident about my future foot condition. Ive seen many doctors in my life, but he will always be on the top of my list. I highly recommend him as a point of reference or an accomplished surgeon.

The entire staff was amazing!!!

I went to this doctor after being diagnosed with tarsal tunnel and possible Morton’s neuroma. He said by exam only I definitely did not have a neuroma, and he would do the tarsal tunnel surgery but said he didn’t think it would relieve all my pain. I was positive I had a Morton’s neuroma so i went for a second opinion, and I DID have a neuroma. I forwarded this information to Doctor Shawen, and he quickly reevaluated my situation. I had surgery two weeks later for both the neuroma and tarsal tunnel and I am doing well. The office gets back to me on the portal within minutes and Dr. Shawen is a very nice man. I recommend him and his office, but be your own advocate and always get second opinions for yourself. Trust your instincts. No one knows your body better than you.

My father underwent a subtalar fusion with an orthopedic surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital (Aaron Scott). He followed exactly the instructions he was given post-operatively. Following the operation, month after month the pain continued despite being told it was all part of the recovery course. As time went on, out of desperation with his pain, he followed up knowing something was not normal. Reluctantly, the surgeon ordered a CT and following his review, assured him all was well and in an arrogant fashion walked out of the exam room, never to return. Dr. Shawen replaced my ankle that was causing me so much pain due to arthritic changes that I couldn’t walk or stand on it. He explained my x-rays and answered my questions.
