Avoid if you have peroneal tendon issues
I came to see Dr. Ellis with an MRI that said I had peroneal tendinosis, tenosynovitis AND had torn my peroneal tendons in both ankles. Dr. Ellis thought my MRI looked normal (?) and decided to send me for a cortisone shot in my right ankle to help with the pain. The cortisone shot ended up hitting my sural nerve and causing me EXCRUCIATING pain. Dr. Ellis denied the theory that the shot could've hit a nerve and diagnosed me with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and then basically gave up on me as a patient. I write this review as I recover from bilateral ankle surgery - an ATFL reconstruction in my right ankle and a bilateral peroneal tendon repair. The surgeon who operated on me trained Dr. Ellis and told me he should've known better than to give me a cortisone shot in my ankle as it's way to risky. I liked Dr. Ellis initially and mistakes happen, I get it. But it's the way he handled it afterwards - I could not believe how unprofessional he was.

The best Doctor for Ankle Surgery
I needed reconstructive surgery (both sides of my R ankle) and was recommend to Dr Ellis. Everything about him is top notch and I felt very comfortable with Dr.. Ellis performing the surgery. In addition, he is very pleasant to talk to, Surgery was successful and I had the hardware removed 6 years later. Would highly recommend.

The best ankle surgeon in NY!
Dr. Ellis performed ankle surgery on me Halloween night of 2022. I was the last patient of the night. Not the best way for either of us to spend Halloween night, but I shared it with him. It’s now May the 4th, 2023 and I just left my last follow-up appointment with him at HSS and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results of this journey. I went to PT once a week every week at HSS Midtown following the surgery and I’m now again running on a treadmill. If you are in the market for an ankle surgeon, Dr. Ellis has my full recommendation!

I'm Scuba Diving Again!!
I visited Dr. Ellis three years ago to have my ankle looked at. He recommended a Total Ankle Replacement - one of the first questions I asked him was "will I be able to scuba dive". He said "yes"! I was a bit leery, but I trusted him. I had the surgery, was very diligent with my Physical Therapy - and waited out Covid for a few years. I am thrilled to say that two weeks ago I finally got to quench my "urge to submerge" diving Grand Cayman. I will admit that there was a bit of trepidation on my first dive, however I wasted energy worrying about my ankle - IT WAS PERFECT AND FELT SPECTACULAR!! I actually sent a picture of my ankle in fins on a dive to let him know how happy I am. Dr. Ellis and his staff have been great and I highly recommend all of them.

I had a left Total Ankle Replacement over a year ago. Dr Ellis, and everyone associated, was Great and the surgery could not have gone better. I was walking without any assistance (cane, walker, etc) after 6 weeks and going on country hikes after 3 months. I had no problems and no discomfort during this period. The process prior to surgery prepares you for what the recovery and rehabilitation requires and what to expect. [ Doesn't hurt to do your own research and prepare your home and family, as well ] BTW: I expect to have my right ankle replaced within the next year. Of course, Dr Ellis will be my surgeon of choice. Looking forward !

Amazing and extraordinary doctor
Dr. Ellis combines knowledge, expertise and a willingness to listen and discuss. He is an excellent surgeon. He did an excellent job with my foot surgeries. Also, the staff is very friendly and professional. Dr. Ellis is kind, compassionate and smart. He explained all procedures in a very clear and simple manner listening to your concerns. I highly recommend Dr. Ellis to anyone looking for a great orthopedic. Paul Q.

Five years ago, I underwent a total ankle replacement with Dr. Ellis. My ankle remains pain free and has given me the ability to travel extensively (which would have almost impossible prior to surgery). The replacement has had a very positive impact on my life. Both Dr. Ellis and PA Steve have excellent “bedside manner” and have always answered any questions and concerns that I had. I would recommend Dr Ellis and HHS to anyone having an ankle issue.

Very poor result from a failed Lapidus bunionectomy. Dr. Ellis was very personable and inspired confidence until the first sign of a non-union showed and he immediately blamed it on my noncompliance. This is simply not true. After a bone stimulator failed to work he wanted to do another surgery immediately saying that the fusion site would never heal and the foot would always be swollen. I chose to wait and it healed solid 9 months later. Unfortunately, the combination of the surgeons poor metatarsal head location, shortening and elevation from the non-union has left my second metatarsal head to handle most of my forefoot contact. It’s very painful when I walk with socks or barefoot. When I pointed this concern out to him again on my 6 month (and last) follow up he was mystified, looked at me blankly and recommended that I get a second opinion. Bewildered, I’ve been on a 4 yr odyssey reading/speaking to other doctors in order to understand the issues/figure out what to do about it.

I came to Dr Ellis in 2014 for help with a painful condition in my left ankle and foot, due to a previous accident and surgery near my home town of Louisville, KY. Walking was so painful that I walked on the side of my foot. After an ankle replacement in February of 2015a follow up surgery in September of that year and physical therapy near my home, I was able to walk again without pain. I actually had to learn how to walk normally again! I have been back to see Dr Ellis every year since then for follow up visits. He and his staff have always been so considerate and helpful and have responded to any question I have had. My thanks to Dr Ellis, Carlos Kanlong and all the staff there for their skill and care over the last few years.

I saw Dr Ellis for foot pain and he ordered several imaging studies for my foot. After I got the tests, I called the office and asked Dr Ellis to call me with the results. I told the office I was still in extreme pain and would like a call from the doctor. They told me that he would NOT call me and would only give me the test results by a telemedicine visit two weeks later. As a surgeon myself, I was surprised that a doctor that orders a test does not have the courtesy and compassion to call with results and a plan of action. If this is how he runs his office I can't imagine letting him operate on me. What if I had a problem? His office said he is "very busy" and does not have time to call patients back. Wow, I am also a busy surgeon but ALWAYS call my patients back even on busy days, That is just good medicine. Shame on you Dr. Ellis.

Dr.Ellis reconstructed my son's crushed ankle (sports) in a 2-step operation years ago; his ankle is absolutely perfect! The outside scar is very thin, meticulous-never seen anything like it! Can't thank him enough for his expertise! And staff too :) xo

Top surgeon with great bedside manners. Going in for another flatfoot surgery in October. The results on my first one are great, I can walk 3 miles, play golf, etc. Again, communication is the key, and Dr.Ellis and his team, especially Steve and Carlos are always reachable, and respond ASAP to your questions.

I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball. After seeing Dr. Ellis shortly after calling for an appointment I knew I was in great hands and had selected the right doctor. Dr. Ellis is extremely knowledgeable but is also easy to talk with and listens to your questions and concerns. His staff is also very competent and cares about you. I had surgery five weeks ago and I have been very happy with my recovery. I would highly recommend Dr. Ellis if you experience an Achilles rupture

Can't sing enough praises for Dr. Ellis. 4 short weeks ago, Dr. Ellis performed a total replacement of my right ankle. I'm already weight-bearing and walking with the assistance of a walker. Dr. Ellis was spot-on when he told me what to expect. My experience with him has been fantastic. I would recommend Dr Ellis to anyone having ankle issues.
