Denied surgery after last bloodwork before surgery, due to "high", 19, nicotine count. Felt like I was streamed along till my pre-op tests expired. Poor communication. I had to call them, they cancelled surgery twice without calling me. What a scam, is how I felt regarding the whole process. I do have a job that I had to keep changing time off for due to office incompetence.

Excellent Doctor, Horrible Office
Notice how bad the reviews start getting around 2019 due to an incompetent office. I'm writing to confirm that problem and perhaps alert Dr. James again. After almost a year of frustration, I'm now completely fed up and working with a new surgeon for my second hip. I'm happy with my first hip replacement by Dr. James, but I've lost patience with his office. The manager has been blaming it on 'a new phone system' the entire time, but phones are just one of the coordination problems. My insurance approvals for various things just sat in an inbox until I finally got through to have them process it. Then they fail to get the referral or records to imaging or labs or whatever the next step is. I've wasted trips to Sutter imaging and Quest diagnostics, only to find out the referral wasn't there, which then leads to days of calling to get that straightened out. My 2nd hip just got postponed to one year after the 1st hip, which leaves me in pain and limping on my new hip. Unacceptable.

Frustrated Patient out of Patience – May 11, 2024

Will leave you waiting and waiting...
I waited months and drove over an hour to my 1st appointment with Dr. James. After being placed in an exam room and told the doc would be advised I was ready, I waited and waited and waited. 1-1/4 hours after my appointment time, the PA came back and apologized, saying the doc had been held up in surgery and was just leaving the hospital, 15 mins away! They did not have the courtesy to tell me about the delay when I arrived or anytime until after I had waited for over an hour. I left immediately. On my way out, I saw the waiting room was packed, including with people in wheelchairs and a woman on a gurney! None of these folks had been told the doctor was not even in the building! Sure, surgeries can run over (if that is actually what happened), but that does not excuse the disrespect and lack of courtesy to patients. After calling the office multiple times to reschedule, I was told the earliest availability was in 3-1/2 mos. I'll be seeing someone else, who actually cares.

Inefficient Sacramento office staff
Dr. James is a very kind, skillful, and professional surgeon. My wife was referred to Dr. James by the V. A. in 2020 for hip replacement surgery, because the V. A. medical system in northern California was not performing that kind of surgery at that time due to Covid restrictions. Dr. James was highly recommended to us by the V. A. surgeon my wife saw. When we met with Dr. James for a consultation and then a pre-op appointment, we were impressed with his professionalism as well as his kind and friendly manner. My wife's surgery has been postponed several times since 2020, mostly due to circumstances beyond anyone's control. Two of the postponements, however, were caused by inefficient actions of office staff in Dr. James' Sacramento office who were responsible for scheduling surgery and ensuring that pre-surgery requirements were met in a timely manner. We are now planning to have my wife's hip replacement surgery done by a different surgeon.

I saw Dr James on the 22 of April 2021, for a left partial knee replacement through Nanoknee, who he was doing surgeries for. Before I could get all my surgery clearances, he terminated his association with nanoknee on the 1 May 2021. Not Dr James or any of his staff reached out to me about his termination with nanoknee. Even after I had called his office, in the middle and end of May and even talked to a Dr assistant, with no one telling me that he no longer did the surgeries for nanoknee. I'm out the $7500.00 charge for nanoknee to provide the necessary implants, which had to be paid in advance to nanoknee.

Hip resurfacing performed in 2011. The surgeon failed to advisement or cautions regarding the issues of a metal on metal prosthesis issues. Complications started immediately and have been endless due to this surgeon’s surgical procedure and the prosthesis utilized. Popping and clicking in the joint, elevated chromium/cobalt levels, misaligned prosthesis femoral ball shaft and shaft not secured fully, constant pain and discomfort, numerous orthopedic visits and radiology specialist visits monitoring the movement of the prosthesis shaft. My current orthopedic surgeon has never performed a resurfacing procedure as the full hip replacement is much more effective and lacks the metal on metal contact. After just 8 years the femoral ball shaft has shifted significantly and has penetrated the femur bone and is exposed causing a great amount of pain and discomfort. A complicated full revision surgery is now the only answer. My hip revision surgery is not being done by this surgeon.

I made an urgent appointment as to why I was withering in pain, crying, so tired from not being able to sleep due to serious pain (left knee) they got me in the next day and got me into surgery in one week (amazing) turns out it was arthritis that had gone into my meniscus. Problem solved between surgery and physical rehab. I am having difficulty with my right knee now and I am going in again. I have total confidence that my problem will be solved shortly. I can't say enough about Dr. James other than I highly recommend him for his expertise , solutions, listening, etc. Thank you very much Dr. James,

Dr. James did two knee replacements on me...he was absolutely fantastic! UC Davis would not consider me for the surgeries, but I went to Dr. James' seminar and received all of the information I needed. Dr. James accepted me as a patient and I am so very happy. I can walk with no pain so needless to say BOTH surgeries was absolutely successful. He has a great bedside manner and explains everything in a way that a lay person can understand. I would highly recommend Dr. James; and I do.

He's intelligent, explains himself well, and honest. He is sort of casual and really doesn't try to fit the doctor image because he knows he has enough merit that there is no need to posture. I respect him, which is quite different from my experience with another Orthopedic doctor. Appointments take too long. Like all doctors, I'm sure he can make mistakes. It's always best to research things yourself, but he resonates with the research well for my problem.

Dr. James did a great job on a partial knee replacement in May 26, of 2015. Although it was to be expected directly after surgery that I had a high level of pain, Dr. James worked with me even though my narcotics tolerance was extremely high to control adequately my pain levels. He came to my room after surgery and replaced my bandage instructing me "not to touch it" to reduce infection danger. It healed nicely, and I still have pain only when I overdo bike riding or walking/standing.

Dr. James is an excellent surgeon but his current support staff sucks. I have tried emailing 5 times and no response. The last time I went onto the portal to leave another message, it had been disabled and fixed to where I could not leave a message. I live out of the country and before this point, I had been able to make appointments prior to my returning to America so that I could have my annual checks from my total hip replacements. The saddest part is...they don't care...

Dr James is simply amazing! When I met him I was in constant pain and completely physically unstable due to knee issues. I just had a baby and injured it several times in training. My knee kept giving out. He figured out a solution quickly. He also made me smile every time i went in for a visit which was refreshing. He listened, never rushed me, and explained everything perfectly. He is also hilarious! I would recommend anyone to Dr James.

Dr. James has one of the best "bed side manners" the I've ever come across. He is caring, thorough, quick and honest. I've been a patient for several years with different presenting issues and he not only treats the ailment but the person as well. Without a doubt would recommend him 10 times over!!!

Dr. James was my surgeon at Mercy. He made sure to meet me before the surgery to make sure I fully understood what the x-ray was dictating. He came in after to make sure I understood what he had to do. I felt very comfortable with this man standing over me with a knife.
