Receptionist very helpful
Waiting for services is exceptionally reasonable and this office's location is efficient with parking and 3 dimensional entry-ways through East Hilo, West Hilo and turnabout.Thank you

Do not go to this doctor
His optometrist plus great but she is gone. We waited one hour and he spent 10 minutes with my daughter. I couldn’t tell if he was awake or asleep. He listened to none of my questions and answers nothing. It turns out my daughter has a serious problem which was easily detected by a much better doctor. His equipment is outdated and so is he. Do not go!

Something is wrong in this practice!
I have been to Dr Carpenter's office several times; once for optometry (glasses), once for peripheral vision testing, and twice for ophthalmology (cataracts). None of those visits provided recognizable progress. The office staff is very friendly - with themselves - but not much interested in their patients. Then the long wait, watching as multiple couples come and go before me; what kind of side business is going on in there? The staff technician seems to be fairly competent with basic routine vision testing, but I never did get a full optometric exam, including when I went in for cataract consultation (third visit!) and was told to make yet another followup appointment. Never Again, Dr Carpenter!!

HMSA Akamai Advantage Billing (bring handbook)
I made an appt. for routine eye exam. HMSA handbook saids my copay is 10.00 So after my exam I was charged 50.00! why I asked? office person said "you had a refraction exam done and have a prescription for glasses, no I didn't have a refraction exam nor do I need glasses as Dr. said my eyes were perfectly healthy(spent less than 10 min with Dr. for my exam) Then another girl said "well the charge is higher because it was a medical exam and he isn't your PC. Yes I know he isn't my PC , my PC doesn't do eye exams. The billing person comes out and joins the other 3 who seem ok at rising their voices to me. He tells the others to keep their voices down so other clients don't hear. The one office girl then tells me they will bill me the balance, I said fine I will show that to HMSA. The billing guy told her to not forget to add the additional charge for the billing. I have been a patient for about 15 yrs. but I won't be going back again..

Do not trust
I have seen Dr. Carpenter for 10 years, He has never gotten my prescription correct. Went to an eye specialist and she diagnosed an emergency narrow angle cataract and cataracts. So. It's not always about the prescription. Can't believe he didn't see therm. Ugh. I walked out last appointment. New Doctor at Eyeland Docs.

Been wearing glasses since I was a kid and NEVER before had to go in for THREE appointments for an eye exam (and think MAYBE a couple times ever I went in twice). Was confused but went in for the third one--which ended up being bogus to me: field of vision; could obviously have been done w either of the other 2 visits. Then the bill for that third visit was $250, which is insane enough, but somehow they came up with a total due of $270!
