I made an appointment to figure out how best to handle weight gain since I went into menopause. For 20 minutes, I was lectured and patronized. At one point he said to me, “Why do you eat to lose weight?” I said, “Isn’t protein supposed to make you feel fuller and satisfied longer?” He just said it again and again, “Why do you eat to lose weight?” At another point he said, “Would you take heroin for breakfast?” It seemed rhetorical and was after much other berating. I looked on blankly. He cajoled, “Well, would you?” I almost walked out. I got upset and said “What is going on here? I came in to learn about what I should do and nutrition and I’m being spoken to condescendingly and rudely?” He did apologize and asked if we could “start over”. I stayed, but it was not a good first impression. When I left, I was told to fast for 16-18 hours a day. Every day. Without fail. But, I seriously think he was telling me to become anorexic to lose weight! Oh, and he said I will get used to it!
